Shopping for pre-op diet...suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I start my liquid diet on Tuesday so I will be heading out to go shopping this weekend to stock up. My surgeon wants me to drink 3-4 Protein Shakes per day with unlimited Clear liquids. Can anyone who's already been there or is going through it now give me any tips? Now that it's getting so close, I'm both excited and nervous but mostly I feel overwhelmed.

Were you given a list of approved shakes?

I like premier Protein. chocolate is my favorite but so also like vanilla and strawberry. I also like GNC Lean shake 25 (orange cream is my favorite). If you go to GNC they can let you taste some samples.< /p>

The very best advice I can give is to begin the Atkins style diet on the day you begin your process.

Transition to the liquid diet when it is time and stick to it.

The goal is to lose weight.....not to hold off until you've had surgery to lose weight. Every pound you get off this week will get you closer to your goal.

The liquid diet is short and you'll do a version of it post op while your stomach heals. You won't experience hunger after a sleeve surgery, most likely, either. If you do, it's mostly head-hunger that you need to fight through and it will subside and not longer bother you after a couple weeks.

I did a mix of pre-made and powdered Protein drinks. The powdered ones were always mixed with ice and Water......never milk. I saw no need to use milk for anything.....too much sugar in it.

Premier Protein is fairly thin but provides 30 grams of Protein. All three flavors were good to me.

Pure Protein is very thick and filling and provides 20+ grams. The chocolate is awesome.

I relied heavily on the thicker Pure Protein prior to surgery and then more Premier Protein afterwards.

Stay as active as you can before your surgery.....it will most certainly help you recover more swiftly. I wish I'd done better with this aspect.

Thanks! They gave me a long list of Protein supplements and told me to stay away from the Special K Protein Drink because it doesn't have enough Protein in it. The dietitian suggested Muscle Milk Light if I want bottled drinks to grab and go.

I need to start getting serious about this now...the 6 months of waiting for approval made it seem like I had all the time in the world to get it together. Now that my surgery is in 11 days, it seems very surreal.

How much were you able to lose in the 6 month supervised diet ?

I lost 13 pounds but they didn't want me to lose too much because I was only at a 41 BMI (with co-morbidities) to begin with.

I know all the pre-op diets are different, but I stocked up on yogurt (I like Dannon OIKOS Triple Zero), unsweetened applesauce, sugar free Jello, sugar free pudding, Tomato Soup, chicken broth. I really like the Unjury Protein powders. Made sure I got unflavored as well as chocolate Spendor, vanilla and the Chicken Soup. Hope this helps?

I've been doing a lot of Premier Protein during my pre op months. I really like the chocolate and vanilla. I add a tsp of instant coffee to the vanilla and it's amazing. I bought instant Decaf for after surgery! I found the texture of the strawberry unappealing. It had little globs in it. I've heard good things about Muscle Milk lite.

I love Premier Protein shakes, but I just found out from doc office that many people have issues with it so they don't suggest taking it. I liked canned broth. sugar free Popsicles are the best!!!!!!! Have lots! Water fills you up. Drink lots. If you are not allowed caffeine, start weaning NOW!! Mine let me have it just NOT the sugar or cream. And I have caffeine now. I think that is why most people feel so bad and have headaches. I did not. I felt fine. It was hard however, due to the fact that food is a friend of mine and I felt lost without it. To me, being 3 days post op, is the hardest part of this whole thing. STAY BUSY!!! Find things to do or sleep!! Go to bed early and stay out of kitchen past 7:00.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
