I'm in the lab waiting to get my preliminary blood tests drawn. I started talking with a 26 year old girl. We started talking about the gastric sleeve surgery. I told her I would be left with about 20% of my stomach. She said with such force " Don't do that, I'll pray for you". I can't help but say that she made me doubt myself for a short time. Has anyone else gone through this from friends, strangers or family? Help!

I can understand having doubts, but please don't take medical advice from some random person you have never met or from well-meaning but ill informed friends and family.

Why in the world would you allow a random teeny bopper to have control over your feelings for even a moment?

Unless she was wearing a stethoscope and you were writing her a check for your medical treatment, her words are meaningless.

If you're about to put your hand in a fire and someone shouts, "Don't do that!," paying attention would be a good thing. On the subject of surgery, you'll run into ignorance, suspicion, bias, judgment and more. This is your decision to make. You'll make the right choice when you're armed with all the info, are absolutely clear about your role in the weight-loss process, have reasonable expectations, et al.

From some uninformed random? I wouldn't pay it any mind.

Are you serious about losing weight? Have you struggled with your weight for many years, maybe your whole life? Are you seriously considering gastric sleeve surgery? Do you know it's a tool that helps people lose weight, along with a proper diet and exercise? If you answered yes to more than 1 of these questions, DO DO THAT! Do exactly that. Have the surgery and follow the program laid out for you by the medical staff at your chosen weightless center. DO IT! And Succeed.

There, from the mouth a random stranger. Seriously. There are many tools out there that can help you lose weight. I doubt her prayers she offered you will be as effective as this surgery.

Let me take a wild guess...she was either overweight or obese.

For some weird reason I've yet to figure out, the people who struggle with their weight seem to be the least supportive of the surgeries.

And if she's not, she's just being intrusive and ignorant. Pay no mind.

I have two friends who are both morbidly obese, like I was. Both of them say "I don't believe in that surgery. You might lose some weight, but I have seen people put it all back on. The surgery doesn't work." Funny thing though, I haven't seen much of those two since my surgery. I saw them once about 3 weeks out when I was losing weight, feeling great and full of energy and excitement about starting my journey. Since then, crickets….

Thank you all so much!!! I feel so much better. I see why this forum is here. I'm new to this in every way, except my weight. I am completely miserable and yearn for this surgery. I want my life back. Who I was so long ago. I love you ladies already!!

Giving away your power over your own healthcare to random strangers who do not know your struggle??? Don't do that. Hugs from Chicago.

No no, they're right to be knee jerk completely against the idea, because everyone knows before surgery this has never happened to any of us.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
