Eating Post-op

Recommended Posts

I'm about 2 1/2 months out and have a love/hate relationship with food. I have cravings, love the smell of food, but it all tastes horrible. I'm slowly developing aversions to foods I loved and could tolerate. I'm down to eating a little Peanut Butter, broccoli cheese Soup from panera, munchee cheese, and refried Beans. So many foods don't set well anymore, especially meats. I'm not even up to 4 ounces a meal. I'm so exhausted and weak and I know I need a lot more Protein, but I can't hardly tolerate food. Any suggestions? I used to love cottage cheese and tuna, but the thought of eating them one more time makes me nauseous.

I too gag from the smell of tuna now, also canned salmon. I'm only 4 weeks out, but am finding most food is unpleasant. Plus, when I do eat it seems I get constipated. The Protein Shakes give me horrible gas no matter what kind or way they are made. So I am frustrated!

The only thing I can say is it will get better as time goes by and your tummy heals.

The reality is, you must get your Protein so if you are not getting it via food which based on your list it's not possible, then you must get it through supplements.

Try different brands of shakes. I could not tolerate the powdered Protein, it gagged me. My Bariatrician suggested going to a good quality ready made shake. She suggested premier Protein Shakes. They are ready made and ice cold they are actually delicious.

Each has 30 grams of protein and 1 gram of sugar so you need to drink them less frequently to get your protein in.

I still drink one every morning for Breakfast because I still cannot eat enough meat to support my 70 gram minimum.

Also, don't give up on foods, keep trying them. What didn't work today may be great tomorrow.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
