Does your significant other smell different?

Recommended Posts

Hey fellas,

I been lurking the boards for a couple months. I was sleeved on Nov. 9th. This seems like a really weird question, but since my surgery my wife has a smell to her. It seems like it's her breath that I cant stand. Numerous people tell me that her breath don't smell but sometimes I don't want to be around her. Anybody else experience this or am I overreacting?

Oh no, I think you are really on to something. But don't over react. You are probably experiencing hormone dumping. DO NOT - make any real-estate purchases/sales, major business/stock sales/buys, or relationship changes for the next four months. Message me if you want the link to the studies to back this up, but I do know the science behind it.

Has your wife been dieting with you? When the body burns fat it can cause bad breath. Hey, maybe it is your breath you are smelling! Anyway, to answer your question, I have not noticed any change to my wife's odor or to my sense of smell in general.

Funny, I am the opposite. Post by-pass, my sense of smell has decreased greatly, don't know why. I second what OKC Pirate said -- only now, six months out, have I realized what a daze I was in the first five months as the weight fell off and my body was changing.

Google Ketosis and smell. Its the body releasing Ketones. Its not permminate, just means you are burning fat.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I figured the weight loss has something to do with it. When I was on my pre-op diet my wife followed with me on the meals when we we're together. After surgery she has been eating a lit better since I'm not corrupting her with my bad meal habits. She won't tell me how much at the moment, but she has been losing weight since I've had my surgery. I guess my surgery was best for both of us.

I know I'm a little late to the conversation but having super sensitive smell is something I'm experiencing...

It's only been since the surgery and it's doing my head in...

I can smell the slightest thing...

And yes, people DEFINITELY smell different now to what they did pre-op...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
