8 days post-op and I can eat anything, Something wrong?

Recommended Posts

I’ve tried a lot of new foods and I can handle everything. I have no restriction. Is this somewhat normal? I’ve kind of experimented with different foods and some solids. Nothing REALLY bad like steak or chicken or anything. Is something wrong with me?

And my back hurts when I inhale…I’m really worried…I went to the doctor for my post-op appointment and asked about the band slipping and she said “I don’t care what you eat, I’m just focused on you healing”…UGH. I should have stuck to the diet and I wouldn’t have to worry. I feel so weak… and stupid.

Hey I didn't have any restriction post op either, I think it's fairly common. Just do your best to stick to the diet to allow the healing to occur and not stretch the new small stomach before the band scars down. Small amounts more often can help keep the binges at bay. GOOD LUCK

Why are you eating solid foods at only 8 days post op????? I have never heard of that, usually you have stages or at least some type of post op diet plan.

Your band is not filled. You most likely will not have restriction until you are filled.

By the way, the back pain I would guess is still trapped gas. I had HUGE shoulder issues when I had mine. Maybe this is it too? And sounds to me like you may be pushing yourself a little too hard too fast. Just concentrate on the healing right now. The weight loss will come sure enough! Congrats on banding, welcome to bandland!

There is a certain diet that you should be following post-op not necessarily a "weightloss" diet but to focus more on consistency. After the band is placed there is inflammation that occurs the diet should advance you through stages of consistency eventually to a regular diet. This tells the surgeon how the inflammaton is and also can help him determine when you are ready for your first fill. Be careful, choose good quality foods and listen to your body. I think the back pain is gas or if it associated with meals it may be related to over eating, try a "gasx" thin strip it dissolves on your tongue, if this does not help cut down on portions

stick to liquids and soft foods in small amounts - it's not about that you can eat whatever you want - your body has to HEAL - it's tough but stick with it - the first couple of weeks are rough

I just went to my doctor today and he told me that the post-op time is NOT about weight loss; it is all about healing He also told me that if you push it and eat things that you are not suppose to; then you can have complications such as "kinks" or slippage in the future. So my advice is: drink your Protein Shakes, and use your blender. I am going to be in your boat too, and very hungry, but that is par for the course. Good luck.

I was banded 07-11-07 with an AP large band, I don't think I have any restriction either. I had to pay for my band ($11,700). I have not dwelled on eating more than liquids at this point and am happy to be starting "pureed" on Tuesday. I have no desire to have paid all that money just to have my band slip, port flip of casue myself erosion. Remember the band is a tool, not a "magic pill". While I agree it is hard, it's not impossible. Think of your pre-op diet, not easy but you understood the importance of shrinking your liver for the surgery. Same idea, except now we're talking about your stomach healing, rather than shrinking your liver. Come on, you can get back on the wagon if you try!:)

First of all I have not had the surgery- yet. But from what I understand there is A LOT of bloating. Maybe you are retaining Water. Make sure that you are getting enough protein...this stage is not about losing weight, it is about healing. I would think that your body would need more fuel to heal...but that is just my opinion

Hi, I came home from surgery also weighing about 5 lbs more than when I went in. I called the office and they said it was probably due to the amount of Fluid in the IV vs my output. I am happy to say the 5 lbs quickly went away and I have lost 7 more in the first week. Stick with it, your weight will come off.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
