5 weeks post op and bad food choices

Recommended Posts

Ok so I need to get this off my chest. I should be on the puréed part of my diet but have not puréed anything I eat soft foods and chew, chew, chew. Last night I made a fatting dish, chicken, cheese and broccoli casserole. I ate so much I threw up for the first time last night, today I ate some again but not to make me sick. I also ate 3 bite size butter fingers and paid for that also. I feel guilty and like I failed, back to an old habit of seeing a number on the scale I liked and then eating like crap. Self destruction I guess. I just need to be honest with someone. Please don't blast me I feel guilty already I am looking for others who may have done the same and advice for the next time I want to over eat,(besides don't) Thank you

No blasting but have you considered seeing a therapist? Mine has been of huge help to me and I likely would have followed the same path without her forcing me to deal with food issues.

I was going to suggest the same thing.

You might want to find a good therapist or counselor. Does your program have a bariatric support group? You might also want to consider a self-help or 12-step recovery program like OA.

In the meantime, try really hard to focus on the basics: getting in all of your Fluid and Protein, taking your Vitamins and supplements as directed, and exercising.

I'm with @@sandrabeth

It's done now...

Move on...

But if you think it's gonna be an issue again, I'm with @@Daisee68 and @@Inner Surfer Girl

Talk to someone and get it sorted...

And keep up the Fluid, Protein etc...

I was a self pay patient and so I had one Nut visit nothing on going. I will look into a program such as OA. I live in Reno Nv and resources for mental health suck here.

Thanks guys I just needed to be honest and say it out loud.

I just looked into an OA meeting and there is one available in my area tomorrow, thank you for mentioning it.

Glad to hear it.

If you are a reader, I just finished reading a good book. It's by a psychologist who works with bariatric patients. It's called Eat It Up! and addresses a wide range of post-op psychological issues.

Have you been keeping a food log? I'm 5 weeks out and I have also had some issues with desires and acting upon them. I have found that keeping a food log with a space for feelings really helps. You can then see your progress, feelings, and weight and food choices... it helps you understand that before you abused your body and now is a chance to make progress, even if it is slow to come. Note how your feelings are when you act upon desires and when you don't.

Stick with it and don't be afraid to go talk to someone in person, you can do this!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
