One week post op

Recommended Posts

This has been an experience I truly wasn't prepared for. Not only the pain, and sickness but the feeling of just being so malnourished and weak. I have had issues with my weight most of my adult life but never did I realize how much I really loved food. You can't go anywhere. Watch anything on tv. Or go out with friends... That doesn't involve food I can't have. It's miserable. I keep telling myself it's only a few more weeks but it's the hardest recovery period I have ever gone through. I had a two level back fusion and a hysterectomy with complications that required an emergency surgery and blood transfusion the next day. This sucks. Big. Time. I am having my staples out Thursday and then registering for my stage two nutrition class. I don't see how people don't pass out on this clear liquid diet. I need nourishment. I'm becoming more emotional and not to mention very on edge. How do people get through these stages of eating like this? I'm ready for the "eat anything you want at much smaller portions" stage. Planning to do the high Protein every 2-3 hours thing once I'm released from the restrictions. My surgery weight was 195. Today I was 183. Goal is 130. Ready to get back into the gym too. Going to start with walking and swimming ASAP

Hang in there. I had a rough 10 days post op. Then after the 10th day I turned the corner and things got better quickly. It was hard vomiting everyday, afraid to drink or eat, had to go to my PCP to get IV fluids. I felt a lot of regret during that time. But things do get better. I am almost 5 weeks out and doing great. I wish you a speedy recovery!

I feel your pain. I'm 5 days post op and the constant vomiting/upset stomach and weakness was not something I prepared for! If there was an undue button, I'd push it right now. I'm miserable! But like you, I'm on this site trying to find a way to see the positives. Hang in there. Soon this won't matter because we'll be healthy and not feeling the yuck we feel now!

It gets better...I had the gastric bypass and the first week was really rough. I was a mess, questioning why I had the surgery, wanting to kill my boyfriend every time he cooked something. And the sad part is he was making things I normally wouldn't eat. He was really trying to be nice about it. But food is really everywhere. Stage 2 straight liquid, I have never been so happy to eat tomatoe Soup in my life. I hated stage 1 clear liquid. It gets better I swear. I'm on post op week three

I hope you end up feeling

Thanks so much to everyone who posted. I have cried so much this past week. Hating myself for having done this. I keep trying to focus on the weeks ahead and hopefully changing from wishing I hadn't done it to being happy I did. I just really want a cheddar bay biscuit from red lobster lol ????

I started writing it all down in a notebook. Every feeling and thought. Everything. Once it was down on paper I haven't looked at it. I figured I'll do that in a year. Since this is a decision I have to live with for the rest of my life. Just try writing it down, it can be very helpful. Sending positive thoughts your way. ^_^

I am still pre op but I think our starts are almost the same and some of your other surgeries with complications myself. I think for me the hardest thing will be that head hunger and the just wanting to eat. Did you laproscopic? Hope today is better for you than yesterday. Take it one day at a time.

I'm a week and two days post op. I had the yuck part of this too for the first 4 days . It sucks I'm not going to lie.You lay there thinking to yourself ,this is a total regret and then you get pissed at yourself well at least I did. No one understood my pain they just kept telling me to get up and walk it off. ... And then you don't feel like it. BUT you know what ... People actually weren't lying about the get up and walking. You push yourself through with a vomit bucket in your hands like I did and I promise you that you will feel better. I'm not going to sugar coat it. It's very hard, but you have people on here that are so inspirational and I watched a ton of YouTube people that are telling their stories cause believe me you will get tired of reading when you are sick, and it really does help! Best of luck to you all going through this. Keep strong ???? oh and be prepared cause smells will get to you!!! I gagged at the smell of meat, and even food commercials lol

I too am 10 days post op. I had bad pain and nausea as well in recovery. Since being home, I've had gas pains, uncomfortableness drinking Water, incision pain, stomach cramping, weakness, light headedness, more inside stomach pain. It does get better each day but sometimes it feels like 1 foot forward, 2 steps back. It seems like the last 3 days I've been dealing with emotional stuff. Like others who have posted, I think part of it's the food restriction. I felt some regret on and off. Not full blown regret though. It passes. I think everyone has their own individual healing period with similar issues. You are not alone and I feel like we are lucky to be able to talk to each other freely in this support group. Hang in there. I keep telling myself that I did this for the greater good of getting healthy and living a longer life. This part is only temporary.

@@amtc1204 I know the feeling, things didn't get better for me until the second week. I was a mess, I started a journal and expressed everything in it daily. I haven't written in the journal lately but in those down days/ weeks. It really helped me. I refuse to look at the entries in the journal. I decided I will look at it, at my one year mark. That way I can see and appreciate what I have accomplished. At times I have issues with seeing how far I've I have come. Just remember you did this for a reason and please believe it will get better. It really will.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
