Protein Shakes - Do I have to?

Recommended Posts

I'm not a coffee drinker. In fact, I'm not a milk drinker or milkshake drinker. I think that's the problem. It just gags me the whole time. It's more of a texture/sensory issue with the shakes. I'm going to try a couple of the suggestions with fruity liquids and unflavored Protein powder added to crystal light. I wish there was a pill, or better yet, a patch where protein soaked into my body would be nice! :)

Haha! I just went on EBay and bought a 12 pack bottles of the Isopure. I hope it gets here soon! Thanks so much!

I would recommend buying from GNC,Vitamin Shoppe or a similar online retailer. If you don't like something you can return the unused portion for your money back

I liked ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates while I was on the clear phase. You can use them undiluted over crushed ice and diluted with Water or in your crystal light.

I also liked the ProtiDiet Tomato basil and creamy chicken Soups.

When you drink your Protein shakes are you taking very tiny sips? Also, are you drinking them from something with a lid. Some folks have found it helps not to smell them.

I used ProSource no carb because that's what was given in the hospital. It's very thick and sweet, but I would add it to herbal tea to thin it out.

Is there really any Protein powder that is unflavored that you've tried?

I used Isopure unflavored. Check the Vtamin stores, there are several brands out there.

It's a matter of taste really. I use the Isopure drinks but I only drink the tea and coconut flavors. I dilute them with Water. I also use the unflavored powder and add it to Soup. Word of warning, unflavored means no flavoring added, not tasteless. There will be a slight flavor to even the unflavored powders but I find that using herbs and spices helps cover that.

I have had a lot of problems with Protein shakes since surgery. I used premiere Protein before, but I cannot tolerate it now. All are too sweet, thick, etc. they tend to turn my stomach and make me sick as soon as I take even a sip. I've spent a fortune trying to find one I could tolerate.

I finally found one last week! Core Power. It comes in several flavors. The chocolate, like so many others, is sweet. They have a strawberry banana that tastes like milk with strawberry nestle quik in it. It's thin and not overpowering. I first found one in a convenience store. They have a website that lists what major stores carry them, however. I just ordered a case from Amazon. I'm just relieved to have a Protein Drink I can handle! I remember Kroger and cvs carry it, as well, if you want to give it a try.

Mark - give it a try! The strawberry banana has only 20g of protein whereas the other flavors have 26, but, I can drink it. I have to start slow, but after I get started, I can drink it. My bariatric nurse said he had never had anyone react to protein that way post-op - but oh well! My tummy does NOT like it at all. So I'm very thankful to have found this. I love that it tastes so thin and has a pleasant taste. My Kroger only had chocolate, however, as I am in a rural location, which is why I had to order from Amazon. Well worth it though.

Good luck!!

I've been able to drink these

http://www.amazon.com/NuAquos-Sports-Drink-Peach-Mango/dp/B00NG7NRIQ/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1447912798&sr=1-1&keywords=Nuaquos+Protein

they're not as nutritional as the shakes but its better than nothing. The pomegranite blueberry acai was tasty when slightly watered down

Kaizen Vanilla ice cream

Flavoured Protein powder works ok with me. One scoop is 35 gm of protein. Then with milk and voilá another 11 gms I think! (don't quote exact numbers, I'm tired! Lol)

And now my new favorite: chike coffee flavoured protein powder.

Not as much protein but 20 gm and then with a cup of milk adds up to 31, I think

trouble keeping Protein shakes down

@@Jackiesleeved2015

i hated the powered Protein mixed too

drank them unwillingly for one day

then i started drinking the premixed bottle protein shakes- delicious

GNC Lean shake 25 gr protein (other brands too)

170 calories

i luv the swiss chocolate

yum yum yum

nice and easy

don't have to use blender or shaker (i'm "kindof lazy!!!) LOL

it "might" be easier for you to drink and keep it down, no gagging

this works for ME

hopefully you too

try it - what could it hurt??? ;)

good luck bud

Hello everyone! Thanks for your responses. I've read them all and purchased and tried so many things this week. I'm still having so much trouble. I think the reason I can't drink the shakes is due to sensory issues with the texture. Other items I've tried this week haven't went so well either due to the after taste, etc. I did come up with a liquid concoction yesterday by taking hot chocolate with no sugar added and adding 6 tbs of the Peanut Butter powder from GNC. It's delicious! The Peanut Butter taste is there but not overwhelming. It's 23 grams of Protein per cup.

I do have a question, why do I have to drink my Protein? I've found the last day or two that I can get in 80-90 grams of protein daily by only eating protein rich foods.

Thanks so much for your help!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
