Struggling through complications

Recommended Posts

I got sleeved on Oct 8, 2015 and everything went well... Two and a half weeks later I started getting really nauseas and sick. I went to the ER twice and they said it was just side effects of surgery and I'll be fine and sent me home with nausea meds. Well fast forward two weeks I was still really sick and the meds weren't working so I went back. A fever told them I had an infection somewhere but they just had to find it. Long story short, I've been in the hospital for over a week now with a leak and an abscess and on so many meds I can't count. I'm not upset that this happened, I understand complications happen. I'm just struggling today, I am impatient and having a hard time waiting for my body to heal itself. The Dr said its a small leak and it should close itself and they'll put in a stent if it comes to it. But it looks like another 2 weeks of waiting and hospitals... Also I really miss drinking. I'm NPO and really just want to sip on some apple juice...

Ok I'll end my rant. Just looking for some encouragement :)

G'day @@reannabanana

Sounds like a shitty couple of weeks you've had...

And another shitty couple to go...

After that tho, it's alllll good...

Your time is coming...

Good on you for not letting these complications get you down...

Honestly, you had me at "I'm not upset that this happened.... I'm just struggling today..."

Others who are unfortunate enough to go thru similar things should read your post...

You've not given up...

You've not thrown in the towel...

You've managed to see the bigger picture and for that you should be commended...

Take care reannabanana...

And stay positive...

I'm sure you will...

KindaFamiliar

P.S. - Keep us (or me) posted regarding your condition...

Hopefully it's all smooth sailing from here...

Praying for a smooth recovery & bounce-back for you. One thing that all / any of us on this forum need to be truly grateful for is observant, attentive surgeons and care teams - & it sounds like you're in good hands.

As a nurse of nearly 25 years (and less than 48 hours pre-op as I write this post), I know that complications can occur..and whereas scores of suregeries go off without a hitch or a hiccup, there is always going to be that "0.0001%" where someone experiences an unplanned Detour.< /p>

I will keep you in my prayers that you bounce back stronger and more determined to "master the sleeve" than you ever were before, hon. --You've got this...and you've got a world of support right HERE...whenever you need it.

I had a leak a week after WLS and it took a little bit for them to realize the drain tube was the problem. I was like you and the fact that I wasn't mad but just wanted to get everything started. Trust me before you know it you will have dropped 100 pounds like me and forgetting about this minor setback that you're having. Hang in there

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
