Insurance and Approval

Recommended Posts

So I am very new here and I will give some background information. I'm 21, my HW:301 my CW: 275 I'm 5' 9. I started this journey back in August. I'm actually going to my last appointment tomorrow (psych evaluation) before I will have all paperwork completed to be submitted for insurance. I have bcbs fep. My fertility doctor recommended the sleeve after a long history of irregularity and no success after medicated cycles. After deciding to Go ahead with it I am so excited! And I hope I get approved! (That is my only worry! One of my requirements is to be considered morbidly obese for 2 years (40+ bmi). In January of 2014 I had a weight recorded 274, which put me right at a 39.9 bmi, no co morbidy. So that is the only thing I'm concerned about. Also, any advice for what I should do to prepare for psych evaluation? I am very nervous! Also, would it be safe to go ahead and submit images as well to insurance for back up?

No need for images, and as for your BMI history, it is what it is.

As for the psych eval, what they're looking for is that you are aware of the changes you need to make in your behaviors around food and choices, and don't have any kind of serious psychiatric illness that could get in the way of your success. No big deal and nothing you need to prepare for, really.

Take a deep breath, you're nearly there. Good luck!

Welcome! I wouldn't worry too much about the psych evaluation. It's scared me too, going in, but turned out to be nothing. Usually they just want to get an idea of where your head is at concerning the surgery.

Are you aware of how your life is going to change? What do you know about the procedure, and are your post op expectations realistic? What is your family like, and do you have a support system in place? They may discuss your health and diet history, delve some into addictions (if any), among other things. Mine was a very easy, relaxed one on one conversation. Just be yourself and be honest, and you'll do fine.

Some also require basic personality written (usually multiple choice) tests too, but mine didn't.

Congrats on starting your wls journey. I have zero regrets at nearly four months out. Best decision ever!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
