CHOKING ON A HAIRBALL?

Recommended Posts

Okay, I'm exaggerating but seriously.

Has anyone felt as though there was a ball like consistency trying to roll up your throat? It does not feel like acid reflux. Definitely isn't an heartburn. This has been happening to me ever since the surgery and it literally wakes me up out of my sleep sometimes. It's a very uncomfortable feeling.

Are you on a PPI For acid? Because honestly acid can feel that way. I didn't realize I had acid before surgery because it just felt like I had a hair I just couldn't cough up in my throat. My surgeon said oh yeah that's how reflux feels sometimes!

Oh snap.

I didn't realize that could be one of the possibilities. I'm taking Prilosec but I winged off of it because it's not working at all.

Maybe it was working and you didn't know... Did you have the "hair ball" while you were on it?

That's acid. Unlike heartburn the acid build up that comes with this surgery can feel exactly like you are describing. Call your doctor and get a PPI.

Prilosec is not a reactive drug. You can take it whenever you have an acid attack. It needs to be in your system which is why taking the prescribe dosage daily is important. Typically it take 3 -5 days to effectively make a difference.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
