Pain after Surgery - What to Expect?

Recommended Posts

I've had several surgeries. When I have had too much pain, I buzz the nurses every 15 minutes and tell them I'm still in too much pain. The nurse has to call the surgeon to increase or change the medication. If the nurse refuses to call the surgeon, ask for the Charge Nurse and tell her/him you are in too much pain. Every time I have dealt with a Charge Nurse I have had a good response. They are the ones with the most experience and they are responsible for what the nurses under them are up to. Keep buzzing. Keep complaining.

I my experience the doctor has given orders for "up to" X am trying of pain med and when you reach that, you're done. Nurses don't usually withhold pain meds. The charge nurse in your case may have been able to talk the Doc into more. But that's not the norm. Charge nurses are not always the most experienced either. There are lots of more experienced nurses that just don't take charge anymore because we don't want the headaches.

The one thing my doc's office understated greatly was the level of immediate post op pain. I woke up in recovery and immediately was hoping they would knock me back out. I have broken several bones in my life and had a few other very painful medical procedures. When I woke up in recovery the level of pain was right up there with all of them. Some of it was panic on my part because the drain tube they put in went across the diaphragm. It was really hard for me to take deep breaths. So it was short quick shallow breathing along with an immense amount of pain. They got it under control in about 15-20 minutes, but it felt like an eternity.

Once it was under control I went to sleep pretty much immediately. The pain the next two days in the hospital improved each day and by the time I went home the only thing that was bothering me still was the belly button incision.

Had my surgery on Monday, got home on Tuesday. I am surprised how much pain I have but it seems better today, don't let this stop you though, it is only for a short time.

My pain was minimal. I did keep my finger on the medication button, however but was off all medication within 3 days. I felt much better once off the pain meds-not as tired or fuzzy headed.

I'm allergic to morphine also. My doc put me on a Dilaudid pump as well as toradol. Very helpful. The Zofran does nothing for me as far as nausea control. But the gave me something else. I think it's always wise to talk about post op opinion control before the day if surgery and if you don't get the answer you need, might be a good idea to get another surgeon.

I highly highly recommend getting a "belly binder". I got one when i had my lapband in 2008 and had totally forgotten about it when I got my revision on the 12/22. It helps hold me all together and I don't get that my insides are going to pop out of my incisions feeling.

I agree, I have a back brace that really helps with the walking and coughing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
