People envious of WL

Recommended Posts

So I have a coworker who has been very, very supportive of my WLS. She is one of the few people who really knows the ins and outs of everything. She's a bit of an odd duck though, socially awkward. Anyhow, the other day when I came in wearing older, smaller size clothes that she'd never seen before, she said she was "jealous of my WL." That struck me as very strange, given that she knows what I've gone through and what I continue to go through. I know she really meant she was envious of my WL and that she said it with the best of intentions. But still... Thoughts? I didn't know how to respond so I just didn't.

BTW, this is someone who is in her 60s and is overweight, but not obese. Like many women, she also struggles with her weight.

I apparently use the word "jealous" like this as well. I didn't realize some people take that as an insult. When I say it, I totally mean that as a compliment. Don't overthink it!! She is telling you that you look great. There may be a small piece of her that is wondering how she can also start to look better to get such a noticeable improvement. It's all good though.

I agree with esskay77 I'm also guilty of this only meaning it as a compliment! Focus on the support she has given you in the past, she probably just wishes she had the guts to do something about her weight as you have done! I just turned 60 & the older you get it gets so very hard to loose the weight. I think you handled it just fine by saying nothing but you may ask her if she mentions it again, say thank-you, would you like to walk with me sometime?

Ditto. It's a compliment. I say I'm jealous to a friend that can bench press like 200lbs. Lol. Jealous means I really want what you have. She wants your weight loss. Very simple :)

I understand that this was a compliment. Like I said, she has been very supportive of this journey. She has complimented me numerous times saying, "You look great" or "You're doing great." What was strange this time was that she personalized it about her -- that she was jealous. Felt very odd.

I have thought about this as well. There are people who exercise to lose the weight and they are successful at it. Sometimes I think to myself, did I do the "easy-way-out". But really, I shouldn't think that way and I will not let people assume that is what I am doing.

Obesity happens not just by eating horribly, but one has to consider the genetic factors as well. I am not using my genetics as a crutch; however prior to my sleeve, I had horrible cholesterol, HTN, and sugars were definitely not good.

Since then, I have dramatically improved. I look at my sleeve as a preventive measure from ending up like my mom and grandparents. I don't want my son to see me end up like my mom whose diabetes is has taken its toll on her.

If this will prolong my life to a healthy state, then I am all for it!

Take it as a compliment and move on to another subject.

Let's face it.....most people in today's society are overweight. This brings on the issues that we all know very well.

Talking about it with folks is almost pointless unless it's someone truly interested in changing their lives.

It's a subject I simply steer away from.....like politics and religion.

Folks will make compliments on my progress and I'll thank them and say something like, "Thanks....just trying to give the old knees a break" and leave it at that.

I see the same reaction from people who see a peer driving a brand new car......they'll get a case of the "wants" and then self-evaluate why they can't drive one, too. It may lead to their mismanagement of funds, low paying job, etc. Bad feelings come to the surface and it becomes easier to simply think nefarious thoughts of the peer with the new car, "he must be cheating on his taxes.......he inherited his money.........etc, etc".

People can and do say the most bizarre things to each other.....things that show a lack of mental filter or perhaps they don't care how stupid or rude they sound.

Let the idiots do their idiot-ting.......you just stay the course and keep getting lean, healthy and happy.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
