JohaAidenMommy 15 Posted November 15, 2015 Hi everyone i was wondering any of you have or had Gastritis or Gerd before rny surgery if so has it gotten better after surgery or worst?
James Marusek 5,244 Posted November 15, 2015 I had severe acid reflux (GERD) for a few years prior to RNY surgery. It went into remission shortly after surgery and has not occurred since then. I am 30 months post-op.
thbrown223 214 Posted November 15, 2015 Hi I had severe GERD and Gastritis. I'm 4 weeks post op. I still have it, it's not has severe as it was. I use to take 40 mg of Pritonix (Pantropazole) 2x a day. Since my RNY I only take it once a day. My surgeon says I may have to take it about 3 months after surgery. But so far so good. RNY was my only option after my EGD revealed the gastritis and Gerd. My surgeon changed my procedure from sleeve to RNY.
JohaAidenMommy 15 Posted November 15, 2015 Nice to hear positive outcomes, i was scheduled for sleeve surgery but now my surgeon says no because of my Gerd and gastritis he says rny is better option but i was so sure i wanted a sleeve that now I'm worried my only option is RNY since i read is a riskier surgery i want to lose my extra weight which is around 75-80 lb but dont wanna be too skinny as I see people get with RNY
thbrown223 214 Posted November 18, 2015 @@JohaAidenMommy, you will be just fine. I had the exact same worries. I researched for months about the sleeve only to strongly suggested that I have RNY due to gerd and Gastritis. You won't be too skinny. Take a look at some before and after pictures in this bypass forum. Definitely motivating.

RNYDawn 160 Posted November 18, 2015 I also have GERD and am opting for RNY because of it. I am hoping for relief after surgery early next year!
thbrown223 214 Posted November 18, 2015 @JohaAidenMommy...you're welcome. I had my RNY done on 10/12. I've lost 20 lbs so far. I've also been in a stall for almost 3 weeks.
Imagine 1 63 Posted November 19, 2015 My surgeon also said I needed an RNY when I first told him my preference was a sleeve. He explained how my GERD would be worse with the sleeve. I'm almost 6 months out and haven't experienced any heartburn or acid reflux since surgery. After 6 years of daily medication I have been previcid free since day one after my surgery. sharkgirl 251 Posted November 19, 2015 After surgery, it was the first time in 25 years I haven't had GERD. I almost cried simply because I finally felt better and didn't have to take massive amounts of meds to keep in under control.
Hankster 2 Posted November 20, 2015 I was taken off my 2 GERD medications right after RNY. My Dr.put me on Pepcid for a month. I am 1 week post surgery and am very happy with the decision of RNY.
JohaAidenMommy 15 Posted November 20, 2015 Wow very motivating stories thank you so much everyone for sharing I'm not doubting the RNY so much anymore
mike_s 32 Posted December 1, 2015 Gerd gone after. I would have had the surgery for just that reason.
Brewski's mama 4 Posted December 6, 2015 I am almost 7 weeks post op and have intermittent reflux symptoms. I take omeprazole 20mg twice a day. It was really bad at about 4 weeks and lasted 2 weeks straight. It is lessening every day now.

I still take it if I know something might upset my stomach like coffee or some medications like Mucinex. Have you talked to your surgeon about it at a follow-up?
