Authorization request sent to insurance!

Recommended Posts

Hi all!!! After a couple of months my pcp finally sent an authorization request to see a bariatric surgeon!! I am so excited! But I am getting a bit nervous the request states that I have uncontrolled high blood pressure ( taking 3 meds for that) fatty liver, and last morbid obesity. I am 27 years old, i am 5'3 inches I weight 216 pounds. I am wondering if that is enough for my insurance to approve the request? I have a medi-cal (LA CARE)

At 5'3" and 216 lbs, your BMI is 38.3. Medi-Cal requires specifics concerning co-morbidities (for example, your high blood pressure) to cover surgery for patients with a BMI less than 40. You can call LA Care Member Services and ask for their criteria for bariatric surgery. They will either give you a link to view it online or send you hard copy.

I hope this helps!

YeeHaw! Here's hoping for a quick and successful approval process. Congrats!

2goldengirl, the receptionist at my doctor mentioned something about my IPA approval do I need to contact them too (preferred IPA of California)

Preferred IPA will be doing the actual review of your surgery based on LA Care's criteria. You shouldn't have to contact them directly, they have to apply your request against LA Care's criteria.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
