First seminar tonight - excited to start!

Recommended Posts

Hi all, my name is Holly and I've been lurking on this excellent site. What a relief to have this great online community to join! Tonight I'm going to my "educational seminar" at the local hospital. So many of my questions have already been answered by reading the posts here, everyone is so supportive and informative. I guess my main question/worry is this: having a Lap-Band requires a serious comittment to a lifestyle change, and so far I really suck at making a serious lifestyle change - if I was good at it I'd be THIN and healthy already! :) I'm sure I'm not alone, right? How do others who are banded finally make the "jump" (or is it more like CLIMB?) to a new lifestyle after all the past failures? I'm anxious to meet you all :-) thanks for any responses!

Holly,

Welcome I am rather new too. I have been posting for about 3 months. My surgery date is Aug. 15. I am starting to get nervous, but know I will never loose the weight without the help of lap band. To my understanding lap band is a serious life style change. If you do not eat properly you will regain the weight. Good luck on what ever you decide. The more seminar's and reading you do the better informed you will be. Keep posting.

JP

Congrats on the seminar! It definitly is one of the first steps to becoming a new you!! I've been banded now for 8 days and can already tell theres a life style change all in itself. I think the change is something that you choose though, the band is an instrument to help you STOP the bad habbits we've all acquired. (at least in my opinion) Those of us who say that you can never ever eat a peice of cake or ice again are lieing because you can, its a matter of self control. I know for myself, that's what I need help with, self control! When I do something it's full force! LOL Sometimes a lil too full...With time, support, and a lot of sweat and tears you will be able to do it (and me too!!) Good Luck Holly!!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A. Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
