Drainage amount after surgery

Recommended Posts

Well, I finally did it. Phew! Roller-coaster of emotions.... !!

I am two days post op having the sleeve. I was sent home with a drainage tube. How much drainage did you have? I am wondering because I seem to have a lot of drainage and the around the area where the tube goes into the body seems to be leaking a lot. I change the dressing before going to bed at about 7 p.m. and then now at 10 p.m. the entire gauze around the dressing is completely soaked. I know it's hard to to estimate or explain but I'm just wondering if any of you had a drain with active drainage that needed to be emptied about every 4 hours when you left the hospital. And also, how did you keep the area around the drain port entering the body clean and did you have a lot of leakage? Just wondering if this is normal and my doctors office is not open now. It is 10:30 p.m. at night. I would love to get some advice.

My tube didn't leak at the incision site. They had it stitched closed. I would contact the doctors office to see if they need to take a look at it. Draining that darn thing was so annoying. The day it came out was glorious!! And it didn't hurt a bit.

I agree with @@twinhappy

My drain never leaked at the incision site, only into the tube bulb. Check in with your surgeon for peace of mind. Congrats on your surgery!

I didn't have a tube. It sounds awful. I think it is always best to contact your Dr if you have any issues. It is best to be safe than sorry.

I would definitely contact your surgeon.

Luckily my drain was taken out on day 3, just before I left the hospital. I don't think I could have bene able to deal with mine at home!

Mine burned a little bit when it came out, but it was such a relief. Just make sure to take deep breaths when they take it out.

Mine did not leak around the incision either. I emptied the bulb 2 times/day but didn't have to change the dressing. Drain was pulled day 3, they closed the hole with steri-strips and it oozed for about a day after that but then remained dry until the strips fell off about a week later.

Thanks for all the responses. I am now day 4 following surgery and I am still draining a lot of Fluid as well as draining at the skin where the tube goes in. I did speak to my doctor's office yesterday and they said to watch it and gave me some additional instructions but it doesn't seem normal to me.

Mine drained horribly after surgery. I ended up putting a ABD pad over the whole site, so that all of my clothes didn't get ruined. My drain came out day one (doctor thought it was clotted off). I changed the dressing where the drain came out 7-8 times a day, because it drained so much. These went on for 2 days before it started slowing up. I am a nurse so I could handle it. My husband on the other hand was a trooper, he typically can't stand the site of blood. He changed the dressing for me every time with no complaints or passing out.

Yes, don't worry about not having a drain. My surgeon has only just started using them.

I never had a drain is that bad?

Not all surgeon's use them. I didn't have one.
Did any of your income drain at all?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
