Will I be able to go back to work in 5 days?

Recommended Posts

I am having Gastric Sleeve Surgery on November 18. I teach school and was wondering if I would be able to go to work that next Monday? I would only have to work Monday and Tuesday, and then would be off for the Thanksgiving break till the following Monday. What do you think? One more question, will I be catheterized during the procedure?

I did not have a catheter.

I personally would not have been able to go back to work after five days. However, you might be able to do it. We are all different plus I am a little bit of a wimp and was on pain medication for about two weeks

Good luck on your surgery!!

I had a super easy recovery, was sleeved on Thursday and back in the office Monday. That said, my job is basically just sitting in a chair looking at a screen, and I could leave at any time if I got tired. (I did leave a bit early Monday to nap). I'd take those extra two days off if I were you. I assume teaching kids is hard work and you can't just sit and rest. Also, you will need to be sipping liquid all the time, and that takes a surprising amount of energy. Good luck!

There is no guarantee. You have to think about how you have recovered from illnesses in the past. I am retired but I had a really easy surgical experience. I could have returned to work in 5 days no problem. However, there are others who needed weeks to recuperate before returning to work. If it's a desk job that you can fake your way through for 2 days, I'd chance it. Just be honest with yourself and your own limitations.

I have an office job and I am 39 years old and in good health except for the extra weight. I found returning to work after one week was very difficult. The reason is because I was so run down from the lack of food over the prior 3 weeks. I felt very foggy and had a hard time concentrating. I was also having an issue with bad reflux. If it is possible you should take the monday and tuesday off too. You will feel much better by the time you return from the Thanksgiving break.

I went back to work after a week, and was fine. I have an office job. I guess it just depends on how you are doing.

I had surgery on a Wednesday and absolutely did not feel like returning to work on the following Monday. I was still experiencing pain and discomfort. I was also very tired and had zero energy. I managed to make it in for a half day on Tuesday but I felt exhausted after just 4 hours. I should also mention I have a desk job.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll go ahead and schedule to be off that next Monday and Tuesday.

I'm going in on a Monday after working. Surgery at the hospital where I work. My boss is very supportive refuses to let me work the following weekend. I work Friday, Saturday Sunday nights. So I'll be off for almost 2 weeks. I'm glad you're taking the extra two days. You'll get to enjoy your family before you head back. You'll also get to set up your routine before adding students to the mix.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
