What is weigh-loss goal reality, sleeve & bypass?

I was told several times that everyone's weight loss is different and even mine will fluctuate. There is no "average" and instead of worrying about that number, I should just be concerned with following my post-op plan, getting enough fluids and achieving my Protein goals.

I'd go mad if I had been told an average number per week or month to be losing.

When such a number is given, it's not a pass/fail test. I'd take it to mean I need to check food diaries and other records to see where I may have strayed. If nothing is amiss, I'd accept and be very happy to see the weight decreasing at any rate. I like to think, that is.

Yeah, it sounds bad when I typed it out, but the surgeon was more optimistic than rude about it (hard to show tone of voice in typed out text you know?). Just seemed like he was pretty sure I'd be a great success and wanted to motivate me more than discourage. But I was/am unfortunately a slow loser.

In the beginning tho, I think I did lose like 30 pounds in just over a month (which was like AMAZING), so it was looking like I'd keep up a pretty decent pace, and then it just sort of slowed down to turtle pace.

At least the other doc and the NUT were good about staying positive with me despite the rate I am losing. Hey - at least I'm still going in the right direction and working pretty well at it! :D

And it won't bother me if the doc does label me a "failure" at my one year appointment next month - I consider the amount I've lost so far a huge success, and am especially happy about relearning how and what to eat and getting more active. :)

Too many variables affect weight loss and or gain. Too many. You could have done everything as expected, kept a thorough journal, followed your program and gained due to Fluid retention or muscle gain or your period or lost despite not following your program, not staying on your work-out regime and having an unnecessary treat. It would be a serious personal mind f*ck if I weighed myself weekly and didn't produce a number given by my doctor or program.

It is strictly a personal opinion, one that does not in anyway take away from yours.

My NUT said that with bypass, her patients typically lose 10% of their body weight in the first month and sleevers between 7-8% in that first month assuming they both comply completely.

Well this should make some people feel really good about their weight loss! I lost 5 lbs at my 2 week check up after surgery. I was very disappointed when I heard of everyone else's loss that was so much more than mine. My Doctor was still pleased & said to keep up the good work & everyone is different. I'm 60 so age could have something to do with it, also how much muscle you have & how much you walk. I walk every day for 30min. I get my Protein & Water in & only eat 2 meals 1/2 cup & 1 snack of string cheese. I'm now almost 5 weeks & haven't weighed to not get myself depressed. My next Dr.'s appt. is at my 6 weeks the 19th of Nov. & I will weigh then & see how I'm doing. My cloths are starting to feel looser so I think I may have lost more but I'm not going to let someone else's # get to me. So glad I found this thread because I know I'm not alone. Best of luck to you all, we will get there, some faster than other's. Oh & I had the RNY

I have been told that most people lose 50% of excess body weight in the first 6 months and then it slows down after that so it depends on starting weight.

Thanks for starting this topic. I was told by my bariatric nurse to expect to lose 1 lb a day. She told me in my 1st week. That & hearing about the "honeymoon phase", even on this forum, had me very depressed. Not only was I not losing 1 lb a day but the thought that I was in my honeymoon phase & that it would end anywhere between 6 to 18 months had me thinking holy smokes, I am running out of time. But then my brain kicked in....really, with the little amount of food I was eating, did I really expect not to lose? And it doesn't matter how much I lose in so much time...it matters that I lose, which I will.

I was happy to see this posting, though, & hear some honest answers. Thanks everyone!

I frequent another WLS board. On that site, many people put their monthly weight loss in their signature. For lightweights and older folks (like me) the weight loss is not as quick as someone who is heavier or younger. What I like is that I can see that people with my stats (Female/Age 59/RNY/Lightweight (238) usually lose 15 pounds average(12-18 pounds) each month for the months 1-3, After that, it slows down to 10 pounds a month for a couple of months and then down to 4-5 pounds a months for the last couple of months. Another factor is whether you lost weight before surgery. I lost 28 pounds in the 2 months prior to surgery. There was a short time I had restriction Months 2-3, but before and now, I can consume a lot of food if I don't stop myself.

I was never given a number either though I was told statistics are with sleeve the average person loses 60% of excess weight and that the health benefits of even losing 10% are wonderful!

I lost more than 100% by using it as a tool and working hard and making huge lifestyle changes as far as eating choices (not just amounts) and activity levels.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
