I'm in my 6 months waiting period trying to desperately to not gain a single ounce but to lose what I can. In the last month I've only lost 2 pounds and this morning the day of my weigh in with my PCP for my 2nd time the scale says "back to my original weight"!!!!! I count calories I am conscience of what foods I put into my body! I'm so hard on me but isn't that why I'm having surgery anyway? Because loosing weight for me just isn't about counting calories or exercise??!!! It's still just so annoying and aggravating that I can't even seem to keep off 2 F-in pounds!!!!!!

You are not alone, am right there with you. The struggle is real. I have lost five pounds only to gain it back plus a few more. As of today I am at my starting weight again but it is a struggle to stay there. Does your insurance company or Doctor require you to lose a certain amount? Hang in there.

No they don't require me to lose a certain amount, I just CAN NOT GAIN!! But it's so aggravating because I know how hard I'm trying and the scale just keeps flip floppin! Started at 280 then went to 278, 277.6, 275, 278, 281, 277.4 it's BS!!!!

How did you do in the time before this past month? Or was this your first month? Has your period historically affected your weight?

Take a close, hard look at your food diaries. You may find some choices or quantities that, on paper, will elicit an "Ooooh." Show a week's worth to the practice RD; he/she may spot things that you're unaware of. Do you record everything that goes down your gullet? You're sure?

I've never heard of weight-gain from eating to lose. All things are possible, but not probable. There's a reason that you'll discover.

Surgery won't stop you from being hard on yourself if you're hard on yourself habitually. Separate out the facts. The purpose for surgery is to lose weight, that's it. The emotional, behavioral and other changes you'd like to make or see are under separate-but-related categories. I think you'll better focus on the first if you don't conflate the whole shebang.

I feel you. I go for my 5-month dietitian check-up next week. I've stayed very close to my starting weight even though I have changed my eating habits and limit my calories. Last month I gained 3(!) pounds. No excuses. I did eat stuff I shouldn't eat last month. Since then I've been (I think) good.

I've been trying to get in 60-70g Protein and keep calories under 1200. I'd also like to minimize carb intake by keeping most carbs to veggies and maybe some Beans or oatmeal because of their fiber+protein combo. Last night I tallied up my meal and I was way under calorie-wise. I'd have been over 100g Protein if I added in 500 cal with protein and the only way I could get the calories via carbs would have put me over the calorie count.

What's wrong with me? I used to be able to juggle all of this info! I'm so worried I won't lose and then the insurance company will say, "Tough. No surgery for you!"

There's not a thing wrong with you, and insurance doesn't work that way. The reason you have the six-month requirement is to make sure you can adhere to a progrm, which you are doing, and to show that those efforts aren't working, which, guess what, they aren't. I'd be VERY surprised if your insurance coverage of your surgery had anything to do with loss or gain over that six month period, though sometimes your surgeon may have rules about it.

Thanks, 2Goldengirl. That does make me feel better. I was so bummed last night. Worst, I calculated out calories/protein/carbs with various combinations and messed up the amounts and went over in a couple of places. I was kicking myself. I haven't lost very much and really am worried that my insurance company will nix everything. On the other hand, I trust insurance companies so much that I also think they'd deny me if I dropped my BMI below 40! Guess I'm just paranoid.

On the bright side, I joined the Y last week and feel a lot better about myself because I made the commitment. I'll probably be this way until after my appointment next week.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
