3-days Post-Op (Liquid)

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

I am 3 days post-op and I am feeling good. I am already off of my pain medication and the gas is for the most part gone. I have no cravings, and I have minimal nausea.

The only issue is that I am having a very hard time getting my 64 oz. of liquid in a day. I was able to get the 70 grams of Protein in both yesterday and today, but I can't do more than 2 - 3 oz of Fluid in an hour without getting uncomfortably full. So far I was able to get around 30 oz in yesterday and 28 in today.

I am worried that I will get dehydrated. I am doing my best to get the protein in early, so I don't have that mal-nourishment.

I called my surgeon's office THREE times, but they have "Modified hours" and were unable to help me.

Any advice?

First of all congratulations on the surgery and best wishes for a speedy recovery.

Secondly, just keep sipping all day. Your sleeve is recovering from a huge change in size and you will be surprised how things can become easier day by day. Day three for me was probably the same as you but by day 10 I was getting more than 64oz of fluids in with no problem.

Do you have Protein shakes made with Water? I counted those in with my fluids total. Initially I mixed the Protein with about 20oz of Water and sipped on it constantly. Have you tried warm drinks, very cold drinks, and room temperature drinks? Try them all and see what works best for you. Best wishes !!

~ Hugs ~

It took me a while before I could get all the Fluid in. sugar free popsicles helped. Warm broth too. They count as Fluid. Keep trying and watch your urine color. If it is fairly light in color, you aren't in danger of dehydration.

I alternated between the savory of broth and the sweetness of the sugar free Popsicles. That seemed to help me.

Remember that in the beginning it's more important to concentrate on keeping hydrated than getting all your Protein in. Severe dehydration can land you in the hospital.

It will get better day by day. Best of luck!

I too have had an impossible time getting all the liquids in. Surgery was 5 days ago. Each day has gotten a little bit easier. I feel better today than I have since surgery. I have been feeling hunger tho, and it sure doesn't feel like acid reflux.

I had a terrible time getting my fluids in. Even at 3 months post-op, I still only average about 40 ozs per day.

I think day 3 I only got 9 ozs and day 4 was 12.

It was rough!

But each day improves! You will get there.

Today was Day 4 - I got 62 oz of Protein in with 42 oz of Fluid (counting Water, juice, Protein shake, yogurt, and soup). As soon as I am at the 4 oz. mark, I start getting this heart burn feeling in my chest.

At least today was better than yesterday. It give me hope! Thank you all for your experiences!

I have tried EVERYTHING. I cannot handle just plain lukewarm liquids or full liquids. I have to have them either cold or warm/hot. I am hoping that tomorrow will be better. I was able to get a 5 oz cup of yogurt with Protein powder down in an hour and a half, woo!!!

Seriously, stay off the scale.< /p>

You just had major surgery and are healing. Focus on your Protein and fluids so that you can heal.

Weight loss will come.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
