6 years post-op. Having too much difficulties to weight loss!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!!!

I'm new at this forum but tried before to find a related topic.

I've done my bypass surgery 6 years ago. I lost around 55 kilos. In the last years, I've been gain some weight (completely my fault)! I gained around 10 kilos.

Now, I decided to change this situation and i've started the Dukan diet. I'm at the 20th day and i have lost just around 2 kilos. And i'm very restrict to the diet.

I talked with two more friends that did the surgery at the same time as me. Both have the same problem to loose weight. It seems like our body cannot eliminate any weight.

Does anyone suffering the same thing here? It is so frustrating!

Cheers,

t.calgary

I don't know what the Dukan diet is. But 2 kilos lost in 20 days is not the same as "not losing weight.

At that pace you'll lose 3 kilos in a month. That's not so bad from my point of view.

Keep it up, and in 3 months you'll have lost those 10 kilos.

Make sense?

Dukan IIRC is similar to Atkins. My sole purpose in this is to not engage in a fad diet ever again. I want the practice of 3 healthy meals and a snack a day if necessary to be my at of life. I can acknowledge that a slip up on occasion may happen, but I want that to be the exception not the norm. I have promised myself to eat right and exercise. I feel like I was given a gift. When I have trouble I plan to use support groups and any tool I can find to stay on track.

ETA: Dukan diet. - Similar to Atkins in that it is in low carb, high Protein, limited fruits and veg.

At 6 years post-op, you are definitely in the "Maintenance" stage. The approach during this stage is different than the approach used in the"Weight Loss" stage. I wrote a short article that describes the approach that I followed. It is available in the following link: http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery2.pdf

I am nearly 4 years post op, I have not have significant regain, but a I got a couple of pounds over goal.

OMG... really really hard, and shockingly slow to relose. i consider losing .5 to 1 pound a week to be OUTSTANDING. So, it took me months to lose 10#, but, I did and am back at goal. It will take me months more to get back UNDER goal, but I will get there... a few ounces at a time!

Here is what I think - act line thin people do. Ooops.... I am up a couple of pounds - I need to go back to what works! I don't happen to think that low carbing is a fad, I think for some of us it is a reality. for me it works.

So, I am convinced that the key to long term success is that diligence, that avoiding denial, that going back to what works... and being in it for the LONG HAUL. It isn't about losing regain fast... it is about STOPPING more regain and then ideally losing it again in a slow slog. I reckon that is the story for the rest of my life!

In my opinion, it is "magical thinking" to believe that once at goal, I am not hungry, life is good, I never have to be concerned about what I eat... ever ever again. That has not been my experience, and i chat with enough other "veterans" to believe that many others have to continually work at maintenance.

The difference is, pre WLS - I didn't stand a chance. Now, it is work, it is effort, it is slow, but I can do it!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
