Welcome. You might also find a Bariatric Surgery Support Group Meeting in your area. Generally they happen monthly and are free. It seems like you are in the middle of the process. You will undergo a series of pre-op testing which takes almost a day. If they find anything of concern, they will schedule you for follow-on specialized tests with a specialist in the field of expertise. They are just trying to be extra careful to avoid problems during surgery. They will set a surgery date. Towards the end, there is a half day class that provides great detail about the surgery and post-op requirements. A lot of information is provided during this class.

Hi there and welcome! Congratulations on taking steps to get healthy. It is an exciting time as you get closer to surgery dates.

As James said most of the testing you go through is just to make sure that a safe surgery can be performed. Bariatric surgery has become fairly routine but being obese comes with potential complications if you don't dot all your i's and cross your t's.

As you know getting through the process requires great patience. Every step is really worth it in the end.

Having bypass surgery was the very best thing I have ever done for myself. I thank god everyday that we have such an incredible medical community.

They literally saved my life!

If you have any questions feel free to either post or reach out. I would be happy to help.

I literally have a whole day of the testing I have a GIA I have physical therapy that I have nutrition dietitian medical bed console and the next day upper G.I. I mean I'm like I think all the tests that I have to do you are all in one or two days and now I just don't know what comes after that other than the surgery and I've been asking what comes after all the testing But I don't ever get a response so I'm just kind of like scared is it just all this testing and then Bam surgery or is it testing the new meet with the surgeon and then surgery that's my question

hi welcome! I think you will find that every doctor's office requires a lot of the same things - nutrition, psychological, testing, (blood, ekg, egd,) some also require testing for sleep apnea and other tests depending on your medical conditions. I received a list of what to expect from my doctor's office at my first consultation. If you did not get something like that, you might want to call and ask After my last test and I had all my clearances, everything was submitted to my insurance company. Although it varies, my insurance company (BCBSNC) only took about 3 days to approve - but I have seen on here that the approval process can vary.

Once I was approved, things moved really quickly - (that varies also for folks) I was then two weeks before surgery - started my liquid diet right away, had the half day pre-op class, met with my surgeon, met with anesthesia, registered at the hospital, etc.

I hope this helps. Again, welcome - feel free to ask questions; there are a lot of folks here who have a lot of wisdom and experience. Best of luck for your journey!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
