Elective gallbladder removal

Recommended Posts

my bariatric center makes it a regular practice to take the gallbladder during surgery unless it would be a health risk to do so. There are just far too many instances of problems that arise after bariatric surgery from the gall bladder. Luckily, or somewhat unluckily, I had bad stones last year and had it taken out, so I was completely healed when I had my rny in August.

I had my surgery Oct 15 and had my gallbladder removed and a hernia repaired. Surgeon said they are a major fix later on if they needed to be removed or fixed. I had gallstones so it had to be done at same time. Good luck.

I'm so surprised that it's done on a preventive basis.

Thirty years ago I had what seemed to be acute appendicitis. Routine ultrasound at the ER showed gallstones, but all other tests confirmed appendicitis. If it hadn't been for the appendix, I wouldn't have known about the stones. The surgeon wouldn't take both organs, saying it would mean too much chance for infection. He suggested doing the GB six months later. My choice was to keep it, as it hadn't been problematic and perhaps I could go through life that way.

About 25 years later, around the time that I began the pre-WLS process, mild GB symptoms began and increased gradually. A general surgeon (not WLS) told me that the pain I described didn't match the usual GB complaints and to go ahead with band surgery. As WLS got closer, the GB pain was still increasing, but still not so bad. I nagged my WLS to do banding and let the GB wait. Banding in October. Then I had no choice but to do GB two months later. My band surgeon did it with an "I told you so" grin-smirk and with affection. We really do like each other.. .

My dr told me he was taking my gallbladder because after wls there is a bigger chance for problems with removing the gallbladder later on once wls was done.

According to my surgeon, it used to be regular practice to take out the gallbladder, but now they found that not as many people have problems with gallstones as originally thought. I may have mine removed. It is the current plan as long as there are no complications. This is due to the fact that I already have gallstones.

I don't agree with my dr and think he should just take it, but he won't. He is "the best" around so in trying to trust him but I know that I'll end up having it out sooner or later :(

Same here...my doc is "the best", he's been doing this forever and actually teaches bariatric studies ...he said he only takes the gallbladder if there are current problems or a strong family history of issues, of which need to be verified.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
