Not feeling well at all

I am on day 10 of my pre-op diet and it is kicking my butt. I feel so weak and nauseated most of the time. I'm consuming around 500-700 calories per day. My surgery is scheduled for Monday. My question is, for those of you that are post-op, how long do you feel this way? Or, did you feel this way when you were doing your pre-op diet. I don't know how much longer I can do this. :(

@@buzzly36, hang in there, you can do it. Don't do anything to jeopardize your surgery, hang in there you will be fine. I will be doing my pre-op diet next week on Wednesday. I read your post and one of the things I've been told is that once we have surgery, we will not feel hungry. Not sure, I'm not there yet, but they cut off this hormone that produces hunger. We won't be eating as much. I'm hopeful that this is the case, I've thought about it too, will I feel this hungry after Ive had surgery, etc.etc...... Hang in there.

For me the weakness continued post op because of how few calories I was consuming. I didn't feel hungry or nauseous though

Thanks Solmar. I don't even feel hungry. Everything taste nasty anyway. I just hate feeling so weak all of the time. I'm trying to hang in there but I find that I am questioning my decision to even do this because I don't want to feel like this forever! Good luck to you though!

Sophie, how far post-op are you? Do you still feel weak?

I struggled with the 10 day pre-op diet as well. Kicking the caffeine is what drove me nuts. But I got through it because I wanted so bad to have this tool to get healthy. I too had some doubts, even before enetering the OR. So glad I didn't run the opposite way. This is the best thing I've ever done for my well being.

I actually went for my 3 yr post op follow-up appointment today. All numbers & counts in the perfect range & I've never been healthier.

I do get the hunger feeling, it doesn't last long, it doesn't happen as often. But the ultimate is that it takes very little to satisfy it. Best diet tool ever.

Hang in there, be patient with yourself & follow your program. I assure you that you will be pleasantly surprised.

Change is hard...suck it up and embrace the evolved you!

Life is going to be hard for a bit, well worth it!!

Try 4 ounces of apple juice diluted. Yes it's fast energy but you're just trying to make it to Monday and that may get you over the hump.

My pre-op diet was high protein/very low carb. fruit and fruit juice was forbidden for the pre-op diet because of the sugar.

I would first look at your guidelines to see what would fit into the plan.

For instance, can you have an extra Protein shake? Can you have extra lean Protein?

Don't get tired of the Clear liquids yet, they continue for a time after surgery. I was able to get through with clear broth. chicken was my favorite, but I also bought Soups with noodles and strained the noodles out. That was a bit of a different taste. I couldn't stand the clear Protein drinks - none of them. So what I did there was make my own Popsicle. Using a snack size zip lock bag, Mix the clear Protein Drink with a different flavor extract such as vanilla or pinapple. Almost anything frozen is better than just cold.

One mistake I made was to rush food because I felt I needed more. Don't do it, it can hurt. I had bits of food get stuck. It caused pain like chest pain, hiccups, sweating, just miserable.

The weakness doesn't last forever. My energy started to return about two weeks post op. I am almost two years out and have more energy than I've had since I was a kid and I'm 46!

I am also pre op (6 days) my surgery is the 16th. I am only consuming 500 to 700 calories a day. That's per the diet I was given by my surgeon. 2 shakes and 1 lean meat 4oz meal with veggies.

I have bouts of weakness too. I am not naseous. I have had a headache though the entire 6 days. I am also having diarrhea. It's not easy. You have 2 days. Hang in here.

@@BLERDgirl - fruit or fruit juices are a no no for me but thanks for the idea.

@InnerSurferGirl - I have the same pre-op diet as HopeandAgony. 2 Protein shakes, 4 ozs Protein (food) and 1/2 cup veggies. My doctor said consuming 500-800 calories is the goal. You are allowed to have 2 sugar free jellos, 2 sugar free ice pops and 2 servings of chicken/beef broth each day, in between meals. My problem is that I feel so nauseated all of the time that I have to force myself to get in the 2 shakes, 4 oz protein and sometimes I can't even get the veggies down. I know I only have two days left so I will deal with it but my original question was do these feelings go away? I just don't want to live like this for the next year.

No wonder you aren't feeling well if you can't even consume the small amount you are allowed. Are you at least able to get in all of your Water?

I don't know if you will have the same issues post-op or not. I was never nauseous.

The issue initially post-op for me was just being able to consume the volume required. I had to sip continuously to get all of my fluids and Protein in.

One thing you can do both pre-and post-op is to stay in contact with your bariatric team. If you aren't feeling well, can't keep down your food, etc., you should be on the phone with your NUT an/or surgeon's office.

Don't wait until you are so dehydrated and/or malnourished that you wind up in the hospital.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
