Do you use PatchMD vitamin patches?

Recommended Posts

I've been using the Patches to supplement my Bariatric Advantage multi and calcium chews because my Iron and calcium/D3 were both low. Also have been using the glucosamine/chondroitin patch and the anti aging patch because I got a better deal buying a set so I thought, eh what the heck. I got my labs back and have seen a remarked improvement in my deficiencies so far after a month of use.

I love my patches!! I'm eight months post opp and have used them since day one. So nice not to have to swallow or taste several Vitamins a day. All my labs have come back within perfect range.

My nutritionist and nurse do not recommend any Patches. From surgeon they are told concerns with absorption based on studies with other dermal medications and overweight users.

Is there any competing data out there to contrast that? To me it does make sense that if weight is an issue with steady absorption of other meds in patch form then these could have same concern

Plus I take more than normal dose of Vitamins are these Patches tailored to wls?

Which studies? I'm certain that there were no studies like they've mentioned because I'd be well aware of them.

There are tons of studies about the efficacy of transdermal Vitamin absorption. Please see http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3976443/ and https://scholar.google.com/scholar?q=transdermal+vitamin+study&hl=en&as_sdt=0&as_vis=1&oi=scholart&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiJ7NmUsYXPAhXBVD4KHQe8AuwQgQMIHTAA for some examples.

I personally sponsored bloodwork for 3 patients that were taking the Patches and all were doing really well after 6 months. I was sceptical at first but I do believe in the patches today.

To me it does make sense that if weight is an issue with steady absorption of other meds in patch form then these could have same concern

The reason there are issues with absorption of normal Vitamins taken orally is because they're being processed through your digestion system which has been alterered after weight loss surgery. Transdermal patches don't go through your digestion system and are absorbed directly into your blood stream.

Plus I take more than normal dose of Vitamins are these patches tailored to wls?

Yes, they are designed for weight loss surgery patients. The reason you need to take more oral Vitamin sis because your body isn't absorbing enough of the the vitamins you take orally.

Thanks Alex!. If I didn't make clear it was their concern from studies about dermal delivery in overweight/obese with medications not Vitamins. Specifically, birth control was one and if you google you will see a few. They did acknowledge to me that it was not Vitamin Patches but patch delivery of meds that was their concern. I know there can be variation in recommendations but wanted to share what I was directed. It would be great if there are some independent clinical studies on absorption and Vitamins for wls.

I couldn't agree with you more! I've been trying to get the regular Vitamin companies as well as PatchMD to run some studies on our population. They all claim it's too expensive and not necessary.

I also have been thinking of the same thing, as I thought maybe they can develop Patches specifically designed for bariatric patients; an ever growing population IMHO. I was sleeved 4 years ago, got in an accident driving home from work (I simply passed out at the steering wheel) and this led me to discover that I was significantly Iron deficient and needed an immediate Iron transfusion. I was recently told the same thing, but I simply refuse to have another transfusion. My B12 and Vitamin D were also not that great. I ordered 4 months worth of the Patches (they recently had a 30% off deal). My order arrived 4 days ago, including the Multivitamin patch, iron, Vitamin D with Calcium, and B12. Total with shipping and tax = $249.54. I don't know if it's all in my head, but today is the first day, I go through everything I need to do without needing to pass out into a random nap -- sometimes before I am able to drive home. But wow, I feel so good today and I am still up and not sleepy at all. I use all 4 patches together by the way and leave them on pretty much all day till I need to shower/replace. Can't wait to get blood work done 3 months from now and see concrete results, especially since I am thinking of having revision surgery -- sleeve to RNY due to GERD issues and wanting to lose more weight, and my deficiencies have been discouraging. Renewed strength and hope today, thanks to these amazing patches!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
