Meal Plans and Nutrionist Vs Paperwork

Recommended Posts

So, my surgery was yesterday morning. I was released from the hospital today, and before I left my Nutrionist came to see me.

She told me that I could have mashed potatoes, yogurt, cottage cheese, and 1 caffeinated coffee per day.

However my paperwork she gave me doesn't say that.

I'm still on Clear liquids diet and she knows this.

What do I follow? I haven't had issues yet with throwing anything up. I'm terrified to throw anything up because it hurts so much to cough and sneeze.

Can someone please tell me how painful it is to have to throw up? And suggestions on what my Nutrionist said vs the paperwork she gave me?

Kylie

Congratulations on your surgery and welcome to the other side.

If your NUT gave you personal instructions before leaving the hospital, I would follow those instructions.

Just go slowly, take small sips or bites, and you should be fine.

I don't know what it feels like to throw up because it hasn't happened to me.

Contact her again and clarify. Did they tell you how long you are on Clear Liquids?

@@kyear -- If you haven't done so, you might call the nutritionist to clarify the discrepancy. Your peace of mind durng the learning period is as important as getting things right.

I didn't vomit in the early days, but can give you a tip related. While your incisions are still sore, firmly press a bed pillow against them if you need to cough, sneeze, laugh or do anything else that will jar your midsection. The pillow will brace you and minimize discomfort.

I agree. I would call and clarify.

I am shocked you are permitted coffee immediately post op which makes me dubious of the rest. Clarify and question. Isn't the normal progression clear, then full liquids, then soft mushy food, then start introducing softer solids before going all foods? I know there is variation between surgeons but coffee and soft solids like cottage cheese immediately does not seem typical.

Thank you so much for the support! I will call today and clarify! She had told me that my body was healing very rapidly. (Doctors have always told me I over heal) but, I'm still sore and I don't want to throw anything up! I ate some whipped cream mixed in with my Jello last night, and nothing happened thankfully. Again thank you all for the reinforcement of my worries; I wanted to make sure I wasn't being a pest in calling her about it :)

@@CowgirlJane - I never had a clear liquid phase. I had all liquids>purees>soft foods>all foods. Some doctors also don't disallow coffee. Mine did, but many, esp. those in the Europe don't. I do agree clarification is needed though.

My doctor allowed soft foods 9 days after the surgery. I think it just depends on how quickly you heal, because the original NUT told me I couldn't have soft food until 2-3 weeks out.

Just eat slowly, and watch for the pressure that tells you that you're full. I haven't thrown up, but I have eaten the "one bite too many," and it takes awhile for the pressure to go away.

Update: I called my NUT and she said I could have all of that but to try one thing at a time to see how my body reacts. She said because of how fast I'm healing it was okay, and just to make sure I'm getting enough Fluid.

Today, I've had half a Protein shake, Water, and I'm currently eating mashed potatoes and French style green Beans. I'm just making sure I chew everything up into mush really well.

Nothing has hurt me or given me pressure yet!

I am amazed since this is only two days post op.

I wanted to make sure I wasn't being a pest in calling her about it :)

Stop! Your well-being, peace of mind and success are what matter. She/they are paid to give you the care you require. It's possible for a patient to go overboard (and many do), but the question on your mind most certainly warranted consideration. Don't get shy on me now.

You could never be a pest....as long as you're calling someone else.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
