How often is WLS aborted?

Recommended Posts

Hi, all. My biggest fear is that I will wake up from surgery only to find it wasn't done for some reason. How often does that happen??

I think I'm extra anxious because I had a hysterectomy this summer for uterine cancer and still have cancer head, feeling like it could be lurking anywhere.

I don't know how often but it does happen. Your surgeon's primary goal is your health and safety. If your liver is too big or if he finds some other unexpected issue he may choose to not do the surgery. Or, he may fix whatever he finds if he is able. Part of the consent form that you sign for surgery outlines contingencies like this. Why not ask your surgeon this question. He may be able to give you specific numbers, examples, and put your mind at ease.

I had uterine cancer 10 years ago. I understand that feeling. I think it lurked in the back of my mind until I hit the 5 year mark. From what my doctor says its rare that he cannot perform surgery. Follow your doctor's instructions and you should be fine.

My concern is that I had Hernia surgery at the age of 7 but don't know what type. Its right on the center of my chest (esophagus). I cant get records going back that far. The concern my surgeon has is we don't know till we get there. She said not sure if there is a mesh, but if there is she will try to go around it. I do remember the hernia was on top of my esophagus. Im trying not to think of it much and be positive. I told her of my other concerns and she was not concerned of a Tummy Tuck i had but surely of the hernia surgery.

I've never heard of surgery being cancelled. There is one person on BP who very recently wrote that she was for have either sleeve or bypass. Once inside, the surgeon determined that it was contraindicated and performed the other on the spot. I don't recall that she gave the reason.

Your fear of more cancer being found is no surprise given the timing, but if that's the case, you need to know, yes? The anticipation will make you more and more miserable. If you're not taking part in a cancer support group, they do exist in person and online. I think you'd find people who could help you sort out and overcome the fear of WLS or anything else you want but are shying away from.

I'm guessing that the possibility of your WLS being called of in the OR is secondary. I'm weak on the website's tech workings, but, if that's the case, perhaps you can change the title of the topic to catch the eye of people here who've had the same situation. Maybe something like "WLS soon after cancer surgery?" To find out if it can be done, scroll to the very lower left corner and click "help," where you'll find a "contact us." Alternately, start over with a new title, but keep checking this one, as people will still stop in.

Would the mesh show up on a scan of some sort. Xray or cat scan perhaps?

My head tells me everything will be fine. I mean, I just had a surgeon looking all around, had scans, etc. my cancer was contained in my uterus, 23 lymph nodes were tested and all were clear, my oncologist was thrilled that I was having WLS and gave me clearance - so I'm really thinking it will be fine, but... my mind can't help but worry a little!!

@Blerd girl - No, I don't think so, because if it did, she would of ordered a Cat Scan. It wouldn't even show up on a Endoscopy. She said she would know once she is in there. That is a chance I am taking, and willing to take. My parents feel that my hernia was above the esophagus, so hopefully, this is a good thing. Trying to keep positive. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
