Severe stomach pain at night and early morning

Recommended Posts

I am just over 2 weeks post op and wasn't planning on posting this as I thought this feeling would go away but I just can't tolerate it anymore.

At night before bed I get a rumbling hunger feeling in my stomach which I have attributed to acid. I go to sleep and at some point I wake up with a massive stomach ache. You know that messy feeling you get in your stomach when you eat a huge fatty meal and then go to bed? That's what it feels like.

I wake up, sit up in my bed and have some Water. Eventually I go back to sleep. Once I wake up, the pain is still there. I get out of bed, go to the bathroom, have some water and take my anti acid. Eventually the pain goes away.

I also constantly have a lump feeling in my throat.

Anyone experience this? This happens to me every night now.

Sounds like you may need to increase your PPI and maybe adjust the time you take it. Try taking it and hour or 2 before bed. If it continues call your doc.

Thank you for the response. I really want to take more of the PPI but this was the prescription given to me. And it said to take it in the morning. I know that my doctor prescribes more Nexium for people who suffer from severe reflux. Thankfully I have an appointment in a few days so we shall see what happens.

I do hope it's just bad reflux

I am 29 days post op. I still have that too. I read that it could either be that you need more Water or to pop a tums or something.

I do do that and it seems to help.

Like you i'm hoping this doesn't last forever.

I was on prescription strength omeprazole. I ended up need to increase my dosage. I talked to my doctor and was told to double the pills and give a new script for a higher dosages. I also found it was much more effective when I took it ~2 hours before when I would have an issue. I tended to feel acid in the early evenings. I started talking my omeprazole around 2 - 3 and it worked like a charm.

In the meantime, try sleeping with an extra pillow or 2 to keep you propped up. That can sometimes help.

Quick update. Went to a doctor today who is a gastroenterologist which means he specializes in the digestive system. I had to go to him because my surgeon is in another city. He said that the anti acid I am taking is not even close to enough

He prescribed me new medication that is spaced 3 times a day. He also said that reflux is a sign that the surgery is a success as this is a very natural result of the healing process

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
