libby43 136 Posted November 4, 2015 How long should I continue to weigh my food? I'm three and a half months out and still weigh everything. I just feel like this keeps me in check with not over eating. At this time can only eat three oz of food per meal.
VSGAnn2014 12,992 Posted November 4, 2015 You can weigh your food forever, as far as I'm concerned. At 14.5 months post-op I still weigh some of my foods -- especially those foods I am prone to under-estimate, like cheese, and to under-estimate, like meat. BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted November 4, 2015 I'd also add keeping a food log to that. I was using one long before WLS and still do. I suspect I will always use one. It's a nice tool to help stay in check.
WLSResources/ClothingExch 3,444 Posted November 4, 2015 @@BLERDgirl and @@VSGAnn2014 are giving you the best advice. You may think that, after a short period of weighing out food, you'll recognize it when you see it. It doesn't work that way. Just for fun I've tried many times: Dish it out until I'm sure it's the amount I want, so very sure. Then weigh it and discover how wrong I am. I get pretty close with a couple of things, but not so much that I don't want to keep control. The only thing I can get right every time within .2 oz. is hard cheese. I can spot 2 oz of hard cheese at 20 paces. A food journal makes it easy to keep track of what you've had through the day. Even better, it's a reference for times you may go off track without realizing it. You can look back over a week or so of food logs and learn where you went wrong and then make better choices. BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted November 4, 2015 I can look at my food diary and know whether I will show a loss as well.
IncredibleShrinkingMan 437 Posted November 4, 2015 Forever if you have the discipline to stick to that, which is great. Otherwise, I would say that if you hit an unexpected stall or experience any regain, it might be time to check quantities again.
CowgirlJane 14,260 Posted November 4, 2015 I don't weigh food, but I frequently use measuring cups... especially for foods that I am prone to overeating. It is frankly shocking how small a quantity 1/4 cup of lasagna is...ha! I don't eat lasagna too often, but when I do, apparently I am capable of eating alot of it. I also still use appetizer plates and utinsils at home and I am 4 years post op.
jhclikesshopping@gmail.com 285 Posted November 5, 2015 I am at 8 months - and I even bring my scale out to dinner so I a make sure even out I do not get carried away. Love my travel scale.
KarenLoh 128 Posted November 5, 2015 I'm with Cowgirljane, we were told to throw away our scales and do everything by volume now. I (unfortunately) can eat six oz by volume of almost anything except straight meat (still 4-5 for that). I also track everything in MyPlate and love it. It's been fun seeing the numbers be so much lower than they were pre-op.

KarenLoh 128 Posted November 5, 2015 Libby43, I am 3 months out. I have had some times when I ate a LOT more than the 6 ounces and I don't understand how that is possible, but most of the time I'm full after that much and need to listen to my stomach and stop. VDLT 244 Posted November 9, 2015 Can you guys share your guidelines? I was not given guidelines as to how much to eat per meal and I have no clue if I am eating too much. Do you go by weight or volume, how much per meal, does it depend on the actual food? Thank you in advance!
