Surgery right around the corner

Recommended Posts

My sleeve surgery is set for 11/10... I'm nervous but excited. I'm worried about the upcoming thanksgiving gorge fest that happens every year at my parent's house. There will be mashed potatoes but I'm thinking I may not even be able to eat that. When you hear "you can't eat that" does that mean because it into dietary or is it because it could hurt the surgery? Are there foods that could possibly rupture the surgical site? (I'm also not thrilled about forever giving up Sprite, but i am thrilled about hopefully seeing a size 6 again)

My surgery was 11/7, by Thanksgiving I was only on puréed food. But I was able to eat a little bit of mashed potatoes, gravy and turkey all blended up together. I could only tolerate just a little before I got that full/restrictive feeling, but it satisfied my urge for the taste of that Thanksgiving dinner.

By that stage, there was still swelling & digestion issues. Didn't want to force anything. I had the same worries your are having with it being so close to the holiday. But I was so happy I had the surgery & was on the path of healthy. I was ok with the limited amount I could tolerate.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
