Accessing super to pay!- odd question (Australia)

Recommended Posts

I have been on a massive fight the last 4 months to access my super to pay for some of my surgery.

I finally found out today I am eligible. However the wording the letter uses is terrible!!!

It states that I am eligible for $xxxxx (net charges and taxes) and I know it sounds silly but I'm not sure if that means that taxes and charges will be taken off that amount or if they have already been taken off.

(I am aware what net means but I was under the impression that my super company may have their own charges)

Can anyone help? I spent 45 mins on hold today to ask and ran out of time on the phone.

Holding on for information is universal, then. Your super, of course, will be the most reliable source of info and I suggest you keep calling until you reach a person. (Get the names of all parties who handle your request.)

As a second choice, I'm asking another Aussie on the website to look at your question. I get the feeling that the medical benefits system and jargon may be just different enough from the U.S. system/jargon that attempting to answer you will cause more confusion.

P.S. Something to consider: If you don't have patience to stay on the phone, do you have patience to follow surgeon's instructions?

I appreciate the help.

Also I don't think I wrote that I ran out of patience. I ran out of TIME! I had to go to my second job. I'm working double so I can take an appropriate time off after the surgery.

I'm a little confused how you can compare waiting on hold 45 mins to following instructions.

If it's in your super you probably have to pay 15% tax taking it out. you pay 15% tax putting your super into your superfund. It only becomes tax free i.e. Taking it out after 55 and then it's still limited until retirement age which I think is 65 still..

Other than this way is to go through the public hospital system but you will still have to pay for some I think.

Hope this helps..

How are you? Did it go as well as expected? I must say I am a bit nervous but I am so over being unable to loose weight..

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
