Pre op bowel DISTRESS!

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I'm entering my 6th day of my pre op diet. I was doing great. All of a sudden today, I started getting severe diarrhea. UGH!! I have absolutely no appetite now and am forcing myself to meet my diet. I'm in misery from my esophagus to my rectum.

I'm on 2 slim fast shakes , 2 premiere Protein Shakes, and 3 ounces of chicken turkey or fish.

Did anyone out there have this problem or possible explanations for this. I'm contacting my NUT in the morning to get her take on this.

Thanks all for your great posts!

Yep, very normal. I had it as did many here. For me it started almost right away and lasted a couple days. After that I didn't have any issues up until surgery... other than I had trouble getting in all of my Protein Shakes each day as I found the Bariatric Advantage powder to be repulsive.

Sorry to say, but if you are like many on these boards, myself included this is just the start of open warfare between you and your ass. I'd give my left knee to have a normal BM once a day. I might go 6 times a day or not for a week. Back on Miralax now, day three and still nothing. Oh, but when it kicks in, well, i'll get a lot of reading done......

It is a gastric roller coaster, indeed.

You had me laughing like hell at that description, man. Accurate and funny.

2nd day of my liquid diet and im having headaches!..not sure if its because im not getting my coffee or im having food withdrawal?

Could be either.

I remember my pre-op diet very well. It was calorie deficit and also put me into ketosis after about 4-5 days. It was no surprise, as I'd been there-done-that during my many weight loss attempts in the past. I was comforted with the knowledge that the feeling puny only lasts a day or two if you'll stay the course and get through it.

If you cave in and have carbs, then, you'll simply prolong the struggle and keep on feeling like hell.

Stay the course and gut it out. You'll get used to the ketosis quickly and your body will adapt. You'll amplify the weight loss, most likely, too. Enjoy feeling those pounds drop off and know that you are underway. Your ship is sailing already.....plotting a course to a sunny beach somewhere where you'll enjoy strutting around nekkid.....or closer to it than you've dared think about.

The magic is already happening. Go with it.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
