How soon after surgery are you supposed to start LOSING?!?

Recommended Posts

I'm just on day 3 - I think - surgery was Monday, today's wed. Is that day 2? Oh, maybe I'm being impatient. I know I'm swollen and sore from surgery. I gained 4 lbs I think (I was so out of it the first few days). Today I was down 1 from pre surgery.

I'm a bit tired but b o r e d! I'm getting I think all my Water in and I had a little Jell-O and some Premier Protein shake and powders? utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury chicken broth that was actually really good and soothing.

The only Popsicles I could find said "no added sugar" so basically that was a bunch of fruit juice which I don't think is a very good choice for me with my sugar problems, sugar addiction, I should say so I only had a couple.

I'm walking around but not at the gym or anything like that. I was thinking about walking I don't know maybe a quarter-mile to the grocery store today but I didn't make it. just wondering what everyone else's goals and landmarks were for the first few days or weeks. thanks!!!

You've lost already. Remember they removed 75% of your stomach. The thing is they also pumped you full of IV fluids and pain meds. Stay off the scale until your first follow up. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Everyone is different, so don't compare yourself to others too much. First of all, it depends on how much you lost before surgery and what your starting weight was. Someone who is heavier will probably lose more initially than someone who weighs less. Also, you may be retaining Fluid due to the IV's. I know people that lost a lot the first week (mostly Water weight) and I know others that did not lose anything until 2 or 3 weeks later. Hang in there. It will get better. If you don't start losing in another day or two do not hesitate to call your doctor. His nurses and staff are trained to assist with post surgery matters. I am 22 months post sleeve and I have lost 142 pounds. This takes time. Trust the process.

** Walmart sells Popsicle brand of sugar free Popsicles, tropical flavors. They are yummy!

I weighed exactly the same as surgery day when I stepped on the scale for the first time 11 days postop. I didn't weigh again until 6 weeks out and I was down 17 pounds. I STRONGLY recommend that newbies not weigh more than a couple times/month for the first few months. I guarantee you will lose if you stick with the program. And trying to compare yourselves with others and turn this into a race to see how fast you can lose is only going to create unnecessary stress.

BTW, My goals for the first few weeks- even months- were to drink at least 64oz Fluid, get in 60-80g Protein, take all my Vitamins and walk 10,000 steps/day. These were the only goals set by my surgeon and the only ones I focused on. Losing weight was simply a side effect of meeting those goals.

As long as you remain under s calorie deficit you will lose weight.

Staying in ketosis is a way to seriously amplify the fat loss, too.

I agree with everyone. As long as you are following your surgeon's program you will lose weight. I recommend that you stay off the scale. You will be weighed at Doctors appointments which is plenty early out.

Just focus on getting in all of your Protein and fluids. It's critical for healing and weight loss.

My weight has been dropping like crazy because I have 0 interest in actually consuming any food. Everyday I have to force myself but I am starting to feel weak so I think I need to pay more attention to getting nutrients into my body.

Whether you feel like it or not, you have got to keep up with your Protein and fluids. You don't want to wind up in the ER with dehydration or other complications.

I did not lose any weight on the 10 day preop diet, but stuck to it faithfully. I am hoping the weight loss will begin now. I'm only 3 days out though

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
