I get reflux pretty bad, but my 20mg. of omeprazole daily takes care of it.

Have you asked your surgeon or regular MD? Have you taken the same one consistently twice a day for a least a week? PPIs like Omeprazole are a preventative rather than a treatment... and can take days, to reduce the acid. Rolaids might help too until it is under control.

I take the Omeprazole and it works like a charm for me. I had to take them twice a day the first few months or I still got some overproduction of acid, but once a day is doing the trick now.

Hopefully you find what works.

Agreed consitancy is key with PPI's . I had to increase my dosage to 40 mgs a day in order to get relief. I also made sure to stay away from acidic foods like tomatoes, citrus and coffee. I now no longer need a PPI and can eat pretty much anything.

I'm a little over 13 months. My doctor starts his patients on 20mgs omeprazole from day 1. I had no issues with reflux until about 3 months in. I then increased my daily dosage to 40 months. From 3 - 6 months I took that daily. I realized I would experience acid in the early evenings so I would take it around 2 - 3 pm. By month 7 I no longer needed it and haven't used it since.

My acid reflux varies but I mainly get it at night. Here is what I noticed: by virtue of this surgery I never ever feel like eating, especially at night. However tonight for example, I had panadol (pain killer similar to advil or Tylenol) because of some uterus cramps and my birth control pill. Since my stomach is empty, the acid reflux is here with vengeance punishing me for taking the pills on an empty stomach.

HOWEVER when I eat a couple of spoonfuls of low fat plain yogurt or the yogurt drink called laban ayran, I don't get the stomach aches/reflux as I usually do. My reflux pill is in the morning so I find that by the time night comes around if starts to fade and consuming some Probiotics really helps.

Hello I'm new to the forum. I have my pre-op appointment 4 Nov, although I'm super excited I'm a little nervous. Initially I chose the sleeve but the nurse said the doctor will try to persuade me that the DS is probably better since I currently suffer from acid reflux pretty much everyday depending on what I eat. BTW I'm currently not being treated for acid reflux with a prescription. I'm just wondering can the reflux be controlled with meds?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
