Preconceptions on Surgery

Recommended Posts

I am definitely not against you! I feel that this surgery has saved my life. It is an amazing tool. Just make sure you are commited. If you were able to lose on your own then I am sure you have what it takes to be successful with this!!

This is a decision that is yours and only yours to make- you are the one that will be living with it. Not your friends or your SO. It would be great if your SO supported you- it would make things easier for sure- but this is your life and your decision!!

Only you and your surgeon can decide if surgery is the right solution for you right now. Keep researching and talk with your doctors until you are comfortable with your decision. Your friends don't need to have a say.

In the meantime, one thing that concerned me was when you talked about restricting calories to under 800 per day and exercising 4-5 times per week. An important thing I learned through this process is how badly served I had been by traditional diets and dieting advice throughout my life. It turns out that most, if not all of that was a big cause of my yo-yo dieting and wrecked metabolism.

Whether or not you decide to have the surgery, I recommend you find a good bariatric nutritionist who can help you design a healthy eating plan. One that takes into account your activity level and lifestyle.

It also wouldn't hurt to talk with a counselor or therapist, and attend support group meetings.

Best of luck with your decision.

My sister and I did this together. One of the things we've learned is that we learn something new everyday! This journey is exciting, gratifying, and eye opening to say the least. It has highs, lows, and everything between the two! We both agree it is a physical, spiritual, and mental journey as well! In short, weight loss is but one aspect of the surgery! You will most certainly deal with each of these aspects on your journey! My advice, ask yourself why you're choosing this approach. Also ask yourself if once you are the pretty, skinny one, will that satisfy you? Are you choosing this route to prove your friends you can be the pretty skinny one, or for your health and wellness? How will you feel if your friends give you the cold shoulder once you achieve this goal due to WLS (something that is quite likely given their reaction at the mere mention of WLS)? Will that affect you profoundly, or will you be able to shrug it off? Are you seeking their approval simply because they've always been the skinny ones, and not you? Make sure you're doing this for you, and not just to prove a point! WLS is a big lifestyle adjustment, so make sure it's something you really want for you, and not to prove you can be skinny to others! As others have mentioned, your lifestyle will be changed forever! Whatever you decide, you will have to live with the decision; not your friends! Being the pretty skinny one will be a biproduct of WLS; just make sure it is not your driver!

Good luck with whatever you decide!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
