Eroded Band, Aborted Bypass Surgery

Recommended Posts

So I went for my bypass revision today and when I woke up, I was told that they had to remove the band and abort the bypass surgery. It couldn't be done because the band eroded by stomach and my organs were swollen and smashed together.

I can try again in three months.

Anyone else have this issue?

I feel so defeated and hurt. I've had nothing but problems with this band

It's the worst decision I've ever made. I'm so emotional end just upset right now.

I never experienced anything like this, so I have no real comfort to give you other than to say we're here for you. I'm so sorry you're having these problems. :(

It's not uncommon. For the folks I've followed, maybe 25% of the band to sleeve or GBP revisions had to be done in two steps.

Remember that your surgeon made the decision to give you the best possible outcome. I'm so sorry you're disappointed!

I also wanted to go immediately from my band to RNY, but both of my doctors advised against it. Both, my PCP and surgeon said it was better to give yourself a rest. It's been nearly 2 years since my band was removed, and my RNY is scheduled for next week.

I can only imagine your disappointment. Focus yourself on healing now. The time will go by faster than you think it will.

I am so very sorry to hear this. Your surgeon only wants what is best for you. Give yourself some time to heal and then go back at it.

Hugs!

Try not to let this get you down. I am sorry :(, I am sure it was a disappointment when you woke up.

I wanted my revision performed in one surgery, but my surgeon said it wasn't safe and my insurance company also said the same thing.

I had to have my band removed 3 months ago due to slip and tons of scar tissue was removed at that time (which by the way was very painful).

The surgeon is making me wait 8-12 weeks to allow stomach to heal. I am scheduled for RNY on 11/30/15.

It is a riskier surgery when the surgeon's do revisions all at the same time. Most surgeons that I have heard make people wait and perform the 2 step process which is more safe. Give your body this time to heal and go back later for your bypass :)

Thank you for the support, everyone. I just wish they had told me this before my surgery and before I went out of state to this center. It was his idea for the one step process to begin with. The insurance approved it immediately. I just took so much time off work and paid so much money to this hospital for a procedure that wasn't done. I hope they give some of that money back. I don't know what I'll do now.

Mine was done in one step. There was damage to my stomach as well so the pouch had to go further down then normal. As a result I feel little restriction yet. Still on soft foods but it's frustrating. I wish he'd done it in two steps. Best wishes to you.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
