Consequences of a Food Funeral

Recommended Posts

Proof why food funerals are a BAD idea lol.

My surgery kept needing to be rescheduled and since I never knew when they were calling with a new date I spent the summer avoiding the scale and literally having food funerals every week/day.

oh yeah I am learning that too...I looked at the checklist and the surgeon made it clear not to have food funerals because if you gain weight prior to surgery then they can postpone the surgery. I'm working on losing more weight before my pre-op on 11/30 ..I cannot afford to have my surgery rescheduled because it is holiday time and I need to use my insurance this year before the $800 deductible starts over on 1/1/2016

Yep, I was told originally not to lose very much b/c my BMI was 39.7. I lost about 7 lbs but was also diagnosed with sleep apnea, so the BMI didn't matter anymore. Was originally supposed to have surgery in June, then I put it off due to a new job, etc., rescheduled for Sept 9. From June to sept I ate whatever I wanted and regained the 7 I'd lost. I was supposed to have bypass but the surgeon couldn't make the intestine reach the stomach, so he closed me up and put me on a liquid diet for a month, just had surgery this week and although it reached much further than before, he still couldn't make it work without tension so he did a VSG that i had approved beforehand.

Ha. I have seen many posts about food funerals. Maybe I was lucky because the two weeks before my surgery I got a bad upper respiratory infection and my asthma flared up so I didn't feel much like eating anything. I was pretty happy on the full liquids diet, and before that started I just ate as I normally did.

Maybe this time was a little different for me, though. I had a band in 2009 and I remember going to Olive Garden a few days before surgery as a "last meal" kinda thing. The band sprung a leak so it was ultimately unsuccessful. :(

Drama, in general, is a bad idea.

food funerals are simply uneeded drama.

The sleeve will allow the future tolerance of anything you ate before.....just skip it while in the weight loss phase. Add it back under controlled situations once the day comes to do so during maintenance phase.

There really is no need for a funeral because most people can enjoy all foods in moderation.

Yup, unfortunately the bill comes due at some point. Really not worth it, especially when you still will be able to eat that stuff when you are all healed up. Fortunately, you will be losing so well and feeling so good with all your healthy eating you probably won't want to :)

Thanks everyone :) I actually had my surgery on October 19th and am LOVING it. I obviously previously had a very unhealthy relationship with food. I honestly think the food funerals only made me crave the food more. LOL I do NOT recommend anyone does them. You don't need to and I wish I had never read a post in a Facebook group talking about them lol

I had a food funeral before my sleeve and I have mixed feelings about that. The decision for me to get the sleeve happened very quickly in a 2 week span of time. In a way my food funeral wasnt planned, it just sort of happened. I was on vacation to my home country and was eating everything under the sun that I had missed. Then I decided to do the surgery, my bloodwork came back normal, I didn't have co-morbidities and the surgeon didn't really say anything. Prior to the surgery I did try to cut down on carbs so as to have a smooth process. I am glad I got to eat all the foods I missed but I do wish I didn't have a food funeral or a going away party before because I am really suffering from food cravings at this early stage. Based on what I ate on vacation alone, I desperately needed to do something about my eating habits.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
