Doc says no fruit--EVER

Recommended Posts

fruit is a slippery slope for me. Once I get that charge of sugar all bets are off and it's cake time. :( I plan on avoiding it.

I really am curious -- what were you hoping to learn by starting this thread?

It's sort of tempting to make a fruit smoothie during my puréed stage of journey. But my doc said that once fruit is broken down, it's pure sugar. In fact, he says bananas are "sugar sticks". We shouldn't waste calories on fruit. Anyone having to do this as well?

From reading the original post - I think she is asking if anyone else has to without fruit and wanting it anyway? Just a guess.

Perhaps your NUT was being overly dramatic? LOL. Maybe wait until you're on solid foods and then ask again. I started this journey at 491 and had surgery at 422. With so much to lose, I still barely eat any fruit and it is recommended to me only as a VERY occasional thing and only after I've gotten in my Protein. There are actually a LOT of things I am not allowed to have at all (rice, wheat, grains of any kind, Beans - yes beans! - corn, etc.) UNTIL... I get closer to goal weight. At that point I will have different guidelines to follow. Maybe he/she means no fruit EVER "for now?"

I agree with no carbonated drinks!

But realize that fruits include avocados, bell peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash, olives....

I think my NUT (and probably most NUTs) refers to "fruit" in the more commonplace/widely understood culinary sense. As in sweet fruits like apples and bananas. And cucumbers/bell peppers/etc. = vegetables.

I just think every Doc or NUT does their plans a bit different. I was allowed to have fruit starting in my soft food stage. & also I was allowed to make fruit smoothies to mix with my Protein Powder. I have not had any issues.

I think he and the nutritionist believe that there is no point in eating so much sugar, that's all. Kudos to them for being brutally honest.

I'm fine with it, it is true that once it is being absorbed by the body, there is very little difference between watermelon and candy. It's all sugar. Giving up fruit is obviously something people don't want to accept. But like most things---everything in moderation makes the world go 'round :)

I don't have any issue with your doc/nut saying no fruit if that's the plan you are happy with.... BUT there is scientific proof that fructose and sucrose are processed differently in the body (lactose as well). So there IS a difference between watermelon and candy. Let's not play fast and loose with the facts.

Fruit is all sugar snd sugar = carbs is what I understood

My doctor has always said eat fruit grown "up north", meaning apples, cherries, blueberries, strawberries, etc...

It made sense to me health-wise, I suppose all the citrus and tropical fruits grown in southern climates would maybe be less healthy than the northern grown... :)

Mine recommend limiting. Bananas in particular have a lot of sugar/carbs. If you enter most fruits into an app like LoseIt or MyFitnessPal, you'll find they have a lot of sugar/carbs, and limited other characteristics.

For myself, I have found that if I eat too many fruits, preop, I would GAIN weight, so I learned early on to limit fruit.

I see so many sweeping statements, surgeons and nutritionists telling people to "never eat this again." At least with crap food, it makes sense, but to say you can incorporate fruit into a healthy diet is ridiculous to me. I assume then, that you also aren't allowed any regular sugar, ever again... I can't get on board with being told I can't have something EVER. That's just not realistic.

It's a typo she meant to say the idea that you CAN'T Incorporate fruit into a healthy diet is ridiculous. No contradictions.

I wasn't sure if she meant my post, or just different surgeon's rules in general, but I noticed the typo too and fixed it in original post :)

I was saying just in general

Ah got it.

Yes many surgeons, many plans, which is why you should be selective and pick a surgeon you trust and follow those instructions

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
