Doc says no fruit--EVER

It's sort of tempting to make a fruit smoothie during my puréed stage of journey. But my doc said that once fruit is broken down, it's pure sugar. In fact, he says bananas are "sugar sticks". We shouldn't waste calories on fruit. Anyone having to do this as well?

No, my bariatric program encourages eating fruit -- after we have conquered Protein, colored veggies, and have a little more room left.

I think your surgeon doesn't know squat about nutrition.

Many fruits have a lot more going for them than "just a sugar stick," including Fiber, Vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, phytonutrients.

I eat fruit...apples, oranges, grapefruit, peaches, melon, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, and I could go on. Not many bananas, though.

I should clarify that the nutritionists agree, and STRONGLY emphasize not wasting calorie consumption on fruit. They compare it to eating a cookie with a Vitamin.< /p>

fruit makes me puke, but if it didn't, there is no reason to not incorporate it into a healthy diet with moderation. I can tolerate a half of a frozen banana tossed into a Protein shake made in the blender because it makes the drink a little sweeter and it also adds a lot of froth. Straight fruit smoothies all the time are generally high in both calories and sugar, which isn't really helpful on a diet, but fruit in moderation, like everything else is fine.

If you make a smoothie that includes veggies, throwing in a small amount of fruit can make it taste better. For example, I have taken frozen kale, half a banana, soy milk, and almond butter, stuck it in a blender and ended up with Protein, vegetables, and a taste that is tolerable because of the banana.

So many surgeons have these stupid ideas that their way is the right way and realistically, any doctor who tells you to never, ever eat something, if it is not because you are allergic to it, is not only unrealistic, but not acting in a very patient-centered manner.

While you are on the puree stage it does seem like a waste. Later when you are on regular solid foods, that is different. You have very little stomach room right now and fruit seems like a bad choice.

Try to find better nutritional advisers.

If you want a smoothie, make one with plain yogurt, a splash of sugar-free flavored Syrup (I like the vanilla and the hazelnut), almond milk or similar, a handful of ice, and about 1/4 cup frozen blueberries. If you have Protein powder, throw a scoop of that in.

Blueberries are one of the fruits that are lowest in sugar.

Just don't have a gigantic serving.

Wow, never is a loooong time.

My team allowed fruit & encouraged low sugar fruits when I reached 3 months. Honestly, I barely was able to eat any fruit ( even though I craved it) at three months-belly was just still too swollen.

I have a small honey crisp apple several days a week & I had half a banana and babybel cheese today. I do eat bananas maybe one day a week.

I see so many sweeping statements, surgeons and nutritionists telling people to "never eat this again." At least with crap food, it makes sense, but to say you can't incorporate fruit into a healthy diet is ridiculous to me. I assume then, that you also aren't allowed any regular sugar, ever again... I can't get on board with being told I can't have something EVER. That's just not realistic.

Wow that seems a bit harsh, BUT my NUT does want me to limit the fruit for sure because of the sugar and I didn't do it until more than 2 months out. It definitely isn't a primary part of my diet (and the skins on many of the fruits can be difficult to digest - apples and grapes specifically). I think the key is to eat it with a Protein - i.e. apples with Peanut Butter or apples with cheese stick, etc. Having said that, we all preach that you should do what your doctor says, so at the very least keep it out of your diet for a while.

Sounds a bit extreme. I could have fruit from week 3 (Purees) onward but in small amounts. I avoid bananas because A) I don't like them and B) they are really high in sugar. However anyone who likes them simply needs to plan accordingly. I wouldn't recommend any post-op eating more than half a banana at a time.

My thought is this; too much sugar can be bad, but we need to learn how eat foods that can nourish out bodies. I'd rather eat real fruit and get all the Fiber, nutrients, etc... than any form of fake food or sugar sub. In moderation it can be a good thing. A small piece of fruit before a workout gives you energy and so that sugar gets burned off. A portion for me these days is a half and orange, or half an apple. I would never do a fruit smoothie that was all fruit. That's a sugar bomb. I will do half an orange, dash of lemon juice, tumeric powder, greek yogurt and a scoop of Protein powder. Taste like an Orange Julius.

I was told that I can only have berries and grapes and I need to eat them with a Protein (cheese). I know from experience that eating a lot of fruit has made me gain weight in the past. I prefer vegetables over fruit, so I'm good without them and the fruit that is allowed are the ones that I like.

Wow, my NUT doesn't recommend avoiding anything completely because it causes cravings and promotes binges. I was told not to over do the fruit but mainly because it's not filling and can make you hungry again faster leading to more calories and snacking, but that we should try to have 1 serving a day once able to...after the Protein of course.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
