Still Draining and pain 1 week post op.

Recommended Posts

Concerned ... I had surgery 19 Oct - came home 21 Oct, pain was an issue initially but the pain subsided with meds and positioning. Constipation finally went away day 6. But my drain is still draining.

When is it supposed to stop? It's clear or pink. Not yellow or green or smelly but I woke in the middle of the night with my shirt soaked around the drain. I change the bandage regularly, once a day because it soaks through.

And to make matters worse I have skin hypersensitivity that feels like needles and fire to the touch on different areas of my belly.

I'm taking my fluids, my Protein and Vitamins. So should I still be draining? What can I do about the skin sensitivity? My post op appointment is Friday. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

My drain was still draining right up until they removed it three days later. They put gauze and bandaids over the drain hole and it was only oozing a little then. Within 24 hours it had stopped completely and I didn't even need the gauze. Good luck!

Oh and once they removed my drain, most of my residual pain (and I never had much to begin with) went away.

Only problem is, my drain was removed before I left the hospital. I no longer have the drain, however it's still oozing as if there were a drain still in place a week later.

I'm sorry, I misunderstood. Yes, that does seem like a long time. I would definitely check with your surgeon.

Mine was the same way. After about 10 days or so it stopped and started healing. Then of course itching, I ended up scratching it in my sleep and woke up bleeding lol. Nothing major of course just like a scab, but definitely woke me up from a dead sleep.

Call your surgeon and see if you can get in sooner! That is too much drainage.

I had my drain for 19 days!! The stupid thing kept draning a significant amount and the doctor wanted to keep it in so it got everything out. My drainage was a clear/pink color as well. I guess each person is different. Good luck. The best feeling was when the stupid thing was removed and I was able to sleep comfortably again!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
