Kidney Stones - Oh My!

Recommended Posts

So, I spend the majority of my day yesterday in the ER with Kidney Stones. From what the ER doc said they can be pretty common with WLS. Has anyone else on here had them?

I honestly thought I was going to die or that my appendix was bursting. I was in the ER screaming, moaning and crying my eyes out. Worst pain I have ever felt in my whole life and I had a natural childbirth with my daughter. That was a breeze compared to this stupid kidney stone!!

So sorry you are going through that! I am 2 weeks pre-op & my surgeon has everyone start a medincine he prescribes to prevent gallstones. We take it 2 weeks before & 6 months after surgery. Maybe be something to check into with your surgeon/dr.

I hope you feel better soon!!!

Everyone in our doc office gets put on Ursodial if you still have your gall bladder. Losing weight fast causes your body to create stones. This med helps keep them from forming.

I've had kidney stones 5 times! You're not kidding about the pain!!! I have not had them since my surgery in April, though. I would think the excess Water we are supposed to drink should keep them at a minimum!

I had them twice in May and it was absolutely awful. Worst pain imaginable and I've had 3 c sections! I'm an ER nurse and after rolling around on the floor for 4 hours I finally brought myself in! I wouldn't wish them on my enemy. My urologist said it does happen after WLS.

I've had them twice in my life, both before surgery. The first was so bad that I was hospitalized for three days. I had no idea what was happening, and the excruciating pain came out of nowhere. I remember I was vacuuming at the time. And when I finally got home again the vacuum was still sitting there where I'd left it in the middle of the room.

The second time I knew exactly what was happening, so it wasn't as traumatic. But it's a pain you never forget. Hope you're feeling better now!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
