I'm 2 years out and also fighting with old habits. The only way I'm able to keep things under control is to log all food consumed.

When I'm aware of the totals it helps me to avoid excessive calories. If I'm having a bad day I try to compensate the next day.

One thing that helps me is going back to the basics. I usually do a few days of liquids/protein shakes only and then the rest of the week just Protein and no carbs and that cuts the cycle of cravings for me.

I also try to stay busy during the times I want to snack. I paint my nails a lot in the evenings. Can't eat if my nails are wet and drying. LOL. My nails look fab. and I am not snacking. I am even teaching myself some different nail painting techniques.

Maybe some other people will chime in with some good tips.

You can do it!!! Good luck

@@portuguesegal10 - can you remove the "bad foods"? My husband and I are now the only ones at home and I have thrown away a lot of the stuff we THOUGHT we would eat. He has lost over 20 lbs since MY surgery.

My issue is if I see the food - I tend to eat it.. so I have built strategies to take i out of sight. This is helping.

for instance, I avoid the break room with the "calorie rich Snacks. I also have a "cannot touch" cabinet in the house that is just for hubby and kids. And I have had to learn to stay away.

Lastly - log everything.. Make yourself accountable. Here is my rule - I cannot eat until I finish my Water bottle. This way I have to drink 32 oz between each meal. This has helped....Especially since it take me almost 2 hours to drink my Water.

Good luck!!!

I am over 2 years out and while I don't eat unhealthy food, I do tend to graze. This is partly because a lot of food makes me sick, so I learned to eat at regular intervals and I tend to eat things that don't make me sick- like granola bars. When I go up a pound or two, I get all the stuff I shouldn't eat out of my house and I log all of my food. It usually gets be back on track fairly quickly.

Happening to me now, too. I'm 7 months today and I have been having dinner by myself while reading (after I've sat with and fed my family). Nuts, cheese, or Protein bar. Not *horrible* stuff (except for the occasional popcorn), but things that can be overdone by mindless munching with uncontrolled portions.

I'm loving the coping strategies being shared!

I'm three years out now, and have found I'm going back to old habits too. Having diabetes doesn't help either, as I find I have to 'top up' now and then, just to stop myself having low blood sugars... I'm also enjoying seeing the different strategies people use.

Yeah old habits can be a bit of a pain to deal with. I've totally not given up bread and will find myself eating it from time to time. I try to limit it as much as I can. To help with grazing I will walk. Sometimes at work I will walk while eating my lunch just to remind myself to stay focused. All you can do is acknowledge what you did wrong, and try to do better next time. Keep moving forward and not falling back by dwelling on what you failed at.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
