Getting sick before surgery?

Recommended Posts

Good morning,

I am two days away from surgery, and I have been fighting allergies and congestion. I am afraid that they are going to cancel my surgery because of it. Has anyone gone in with allergy issues or congestion and had the surgery? Maybe I'm panicking over nothing, but I am seriously worried now.

Heather

Are you coughing and sneezing ?

Are there meds you take that keep you from coughing & sneezing ?

Will your surgeon allow you to continue taking those meds in the hospital ?

Also, is this going to be a typical condition for this time of year for you ? Will rescheduling a week even matter ?

I'd get in touch with the surgeon this morning to verify and update them on your status.

I was very grateful to have my surgery in mid-October as it's a time of year that I normally don't have allergies, pollen, molds and etc that exacerbate things.

I did cary along a Flonase spray bottle with me to the hospital. I never needed it as my sinuses were very dry post-op from whatever they spray in there for surgery.

They remained dry and open for a couple days, too. Grateful for that.

Best wishes. Allergies suck !!!

allergies and congestion

@@Heather Feather

hey Tex

sorry you are dealing with those stupid allergies

agree you MUST ask doc what to do

i don't know what YOUR doc will say

not sure about the meds either

IMO if you have a fever doc "probably" will postpone WLS

I "think" if you "only" have allergies , doc probably will proceed

don't know for sure

all docs/nut have different "rules"/thoughts

opinions are like assssholes, we all have one

if you must postpone sleeve, hopefully you can be re-scheduled sooner than later

hope things work out with surgery

good luck

kathy

Thanks, y'all. I'm calling the surgeon's off now. The congestion isn't terribly bad, but I just don't want anything to jeopardize this or make me reschedule. I know waiting a week wouldn't be bad, but I've already garnered a sub for my classes and everyone has already planned for my absence.

Grrr...darn you, Texas allergies!

Hey Dub,

it's mostly just congestion as soon as I wake up. Throat is a bit raw, but I've been battle laryngitis for the past week (hooray teaching!). I'm keeping hydrated and trying to get enough rest. I don't feel short of breath, wheezy, or icky other than that. I am not running a fever.

I've been fighting for two years to have this surgery, and I would hate for it to be derailed by simple allergy congestion. :\

Thanks for your advice,

Heather

My surgery is in 2 weeks and I was in the same boat as you doc gave me Flonase and Zyrtec she said those are fine to take with surgery around the corner plus I'd take Vitamin C along with whatever Vitamins your dr has you on during pre op to avoid really getting sick...Mine has me on multi, calcium, iron, and b-12.
