lost_secret 0 Posted July 17, 2007 I am so happy I decided to have the lap band surgery. I cant remember the last time I lost that much weight on any diet. I am feeling so great, and looking much better. I have so much energy and desire to lose weight. I am worried about my loose skin, I have heard lots of exercise should help the skin tighten up. I need help with any suggestions of the best type of exercise to do. 10 weeks since surgery and down 60.5 pds YIPPIE I started at 325. Thanks Lost_secret
faithmd 14 Posted July 17, 2007 Congrats on the weight loss!! I am VERY sorry to tell you that NOTHING, NO exercises will tighten loose skin. Absolutely NOTHING will help the skin itself. The only thing you can tighten are your muscles underneath it all. But if the skin has been stretched from years of excess weight, you just can't tighten it up... Which is VERY sad, I know....I've never been a normal weight since I started growing boobs at age 9. I will (hopefully-cause I hope I lose the weight) have LOADS of loose skin. I am already saving my pennies for my plastic surgery.
KtKt 0 Posted July 17, 2007 It's recommended that you don't worry about loose skin until you've maintained your weight loss for a year... in some cases, a Tummy Tuck or skin reduction may be covered by insurance --- if you're having problems with blisters & infections.... at age 55... I don't think I'll mind the loose skin... I'll just tuck it in and wear it as a victory badge! : ) katie, the optimist!
Anne Finch 0 Posted July 17, 2007 I am very concerned about the same thing as you, and seems like we are similar in terms of starting weight, etc. Everyone keeps telling me there is nothing to be done, but I know from my grandmother (she lost a lot of weight many years ago after a stroke), her doctors wanted her to get lots of Protein and dairy, saying it would help with her skin's overall health and some elasticity... it did not unstretch it, but it was more healthy at least. i've got to start saving pennies, too, since I am down 80 already, with another 80-90 to go, and am already sagging terribly! kero 0 Posted July 20, 2007 Ladies, ladies, ladies, loose skin is why God gave us Plastic Surgeons...... That's easy to say, if you can afford plastic surgeons - some us exhausted our finances just to have the surgery itself, so unless I win the lottery, saggy skin will be my cross to bare - forever! At 33, the thought disgusts me, but I figure now, I look bad in summer and winter, once I lose the weight, I'll just look bad in summer - in Canada, that's only 2-3 months of shorts and t-shirts, so that means 7-8 months of the year I can tuck enough in to feel good about myself! If it turns out to be really horrifying, I can always move to Alaska! LOL
faithmd 14 Posted July 20, 2007 If we want the PS bad enough, we'll find a way to pay for it. I figure that I wouldn't get PS until I've been near goal for at least a year, maybe more. That way I can save all my pennies and sell myself in the corner for it (just KIDDING), and so I have time to do LOADS of research for where to go.
babs0101 1 Posted July 20, 2007 I too am saving my pennies for when and if I need PS after losing my weight. I haven't even been banded yet, probably not until next year because of insurance requirements. Then a year or so after that before PS. I have started NOW to save for the PS if I need it. I even told DH I was not buying a new motorcycle since the one I have is almost paid off. Then that money will go into the PS fund as well. Yup, I'm gonna get there! janie3867 0 Posted July 20, 2007 Were you banded in 2007 or 2006? I'm trying to get an idea of how much weight I'll lose once I've had the surgery. I know each person is different, but I'd like to get a "general" idea. Also - I've read that sometimes the skin will "reform itself around your new body". I don't know if that applies to people who have not had as much weight to lose as I do - but I don't know. Also - ONE more question. Why is Rice a hard food to eat after lap-band? Psyched2 0 Posted July 22, 2007 If you are only 33 you will have better skin retraction than many of us in our 50s and beyond. I lost 112 lbs when I was 50. At that time I worked out 13 hours a week and kept to 1200 calories to lose the weight. I have then gained much back and now have had the lapband surgery. I did need a Tummy Tuck. My face wasn't too bad. I would have liked a thigh lift but never had it done. I agree that you need to have the weight off for a year before considering any plastic surgery. Your skin will retract some and you'll have a better idea of whether you will keep the weight off on a permanent basis.
cookielover 1 Posted July 23, 2007 I cant wait to face a plastic surgeon! By the time this is all over I won't recognize myself. Hey Kero, I too am 33 and I am from BC, where are you from? I know how you feel about paying for this, OUCH. It is not fair, because it is only a matter of time before Canada gets smart and realizes that lapbands saves lives. I know how you feel about paying for this, OUCH. It is not fair, because it is only a matter of time before Canada gets smart and realizes that lapbands saves lives. Hey there - I am near Kingston, Ontario, about 3 hours from Toronto, where I am being banded in August. Where are you being banded? When you hear that countries like Australia pay for the band, it is sad that Canada, with our universal health care system, doesn't recognize that they would save billions of dollars in related health care costs if they paid for the band. Thankfully, we are far ahead of the American health system, but leaps behind some other Commonwealth countries. My personal work insurance pays thousands of dollars per year to fill my prescriptions, and pay for my physio, etc - they would easily get their money back in 4 years if they paid for the band! It just goes to show that obesity truly is the last form of discrimination.
