Coffee Addiction ...

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I'm Becca and I'm having VSG in San Francisco on 11/12/15. I love coffee. Love may be an understatement ????. Every morning, I go to Philz Coffee for a small drip coffee with light cream no sugar. I am anticipating I may have to drop this habit or my body may not tolerate the coffee. Also, I have heard in my bariatric support group that I may not have enough room for coffee with the size of my pouch at first; I will probably want Water more.

Does anyone who has had VSG still drink coffee? What was your experience? Did you not drink in the beginning but can drink it later on? Any creative ideas to get in coffee and water? Open to all comments. Thank you!

Yup. I've been drinking coffee from about a month out post surgery. I'm 14 months out now. Because of GERD, I would limit myself to 1-2 cups a day, but now that my GERD is a little more under control, I have 2-3 cups a day.

Just all depends on your plan. I think mine allowed it at 6 weeks out, but either way, it was the ONE thing I wasn't willing to give up. A girl has to have at least 1 vice!

I tried Decaf a week after surgery and that lasted a week til i switched to regular drip coffee. I drink 1 cup a day in the morning with no problems.

Decaf is on my approved list of beverages from 2 weeks out and forward. So I think your addiction can continue with some diversions.

I had to stick to Decaf for three months after surgery (doctor's orders) but they brought me a decaf in the hospital the day after surgery . . . not as good as real coffee but it was something! I was so grateful I about cried.

I've gone back to my usual black coffee, 2-3 cups per day, after the first three months. It has never given me any problems. I do encourage you and all other folks to switch to drinking black coffee -- no empty calories!

Coffee is very healthy and contrary to popular myth, it will not dehydrate you.

Has anyone tried the Chike Protein coffees?

Sure have and I love 'em.

They blend well with chocolate or vanilla Protein powders, too. Excellent product.

It's one of 4 that is on my NUT's approved list.

I have mine as my first shake in the morning.

Exceptional flavor. Both the regular and the mocha are great.

I started to drink Decaf before surgery on my liquid diet. Broke my cafeine addiction in 2 days. Since surgery decaf coffee was on the approved liquid list, so I drink it daily. I can't tell the difference between caffeinated and decaf. I vote to keep that coffee addiction.

@@NMFGAZ I love Chike, it is my favorite Protein Powder. I like to add chocolate and hazelnut SF syrups for a hazelnut mocha Protein Shake. I usually just use one or 1.5 scoops since it is kind of high calorie/carb though. I also add a couple teaspoons of instant coffee to bump up the coffee flavor more (I like my coffee strong).

I started breaking my addiction 2 months pre-op. And by addition, I mean if I could have gotten it in an IV, I would have! I used to drink 3 lg iced coffees each day with almond milk (lactose intolerant) & splenda and sometimes flavors. 2 months before I switched to to half-caf ... half caffeine & half Decaf. 1 month pre-op I switched to stevia & no flavor shots. 2 weeks pre-op I went totally decaf.

I am now almost 6 months post-op & have not gone back. I still get the coffee taste I love without the caffeine!

I was allowed to drink 16 oz of coffee starting 3 weeks after surgery. My nutritionist even recommended mixing the Protein into the coffee. I am a huge coffee addict. I must admit I go over my 16oz allotment now.

I edited this to say that my surgeon's office told me that coffee isn't bad for you as long as you stay otherwise hydrated and it doesn't cause reflux. Actually coffee has a bunch of health benefits.

I QUIT DRINKING coffee LONG BEFORE THE SURGERY BECAUSE IT WAS STRICTLY ADVISED DUE TO DEHYDRATION (LATER I READ THAT IT REALLY DOESN'T DEHYDRATE YOU THAT BAD BUT POST-OP YOU DON'T NEED ANYTHING CONTRIBUTING TO DEHYDRATION AT ALL). ANYWAY, I QUIT BECAUSE OF THAT AND BECAUSE I DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE TO DROP IT COLD TURKEY IMMEDIATELY POST OP. I DID NOT DRINK COFFEE AT ALL UNTIL I WAS ABOUT 9 MONTHS OUT. I GUESS MY POINT IS THAT YOU BETTER JUST WORRY ABOUT GETTING IN THE Water ETC BEFORE YOU THINK ABOUT COFFEE LOL, SOMETIMES IT CAN BE A CHALLENGE IN THE BEGINNING FOR SOME.

In last night's support group the nut recommended sticking to Decaf until you've worked your way up to about 70 oz of Water a day...whew! I'm on decaf and will hold off on the regular for awhile!

My doc gave me the go-ahead for coffee 10 days post-op.

However, I drink a lot less coffee now than I used to, having cut way down during the pre-op diet.

These days I drink 1/2 to 1 cup of coffee -- combined with hot skim milk for skinny lattes in the morning.

I can give up a lot of drugs (and have given up some), but coffee will surely be the very last drug I ever give up.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
