Struggling with pre op shakes - send motivation!

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I am scheduled for surgery on Nov 4 and started my 2 weeks of pre op shakes on Wednesday. Today I was really struggling with hunger and broke down and ate a load of food I shouldn't have - I was just so hungry.

I am back on the wagon and trying to stay positive, but I would be grateful for any before/after photos and anything else you can throw my way to stay motivated.

I know I have to complete the pre op diet, or there is a chance they will not operate so I really need to pull myself together. I'm finding this pre op stage very emotional but remain focused on what I need to do to achieve my goals.

Thank you for your help!

I start mine Nov 3. I haven't found a Protein Shake I really like yet. I am a little concerned. I feel ya!! I am not afraid to be hungry but I do not want to feel bad. I am starting to ween off caffeine already, a little at a time so I won't have a caffeine headache to deal with as well. You can do this!! It is ok to be hungry. It will pass by fast I'm sure!!! Good luck to you!!

I am day 11 of my pre-op diet. I do understand how you feel. It took about 3 days for the hunger to subside. I think about day 4 I switched over to being in ketosis, which is when weight started dropping. According to my NUT, it's very important to stick with the 2 week plan to shrink fat on your liver and make surgery and recovery faster. I looked at it like my life depended on it!

But , YES loss of 155 #s . both pictures are of me a true real life not photo shop or whatever but a real person

I know this probably isn't the best but I didn't follow my preoperative diet until 3 days before surgery. Then I went on a total Water and Protein Shake diet and everything went fine. Just saying.

Thanks! I've done better since I posted this but it has been so hard. I'm now 20lbs down (surgery is on Wednesday) which is a bonus but I can't wait for the next month to be over!!

I know this won't be encouraging but the next month is going to be hell. For me, right after surgery for about a week or two while everything was swollen and healing, I had no apatite. Once I moved to squishy foods, I was starving all the time. I even gained weight. Once I started my fills, I didn't notice a difference until I had 6 ccs in my 10 cc band. But I gained weight up until that point. Then I started losing again because I started having the restriction that I had right after surgery. But just know, there is ways you can eat around the band. I would feel not hungry, but keep eating anyway and as long as I ate small bites chewed through then I can get as much as I want. Get it into your mind that food is fuel not anything else. Once you get the hang of the lifestyle change of your eating it's easy.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
