Did any of your Docs require a pre op diet with weight loss?

If so, how did you do? Did he still do the surgery even if you didn't lose the required weight?

My doc required a pre-op 10 day liquid diet to "shrink my liver" to "make the surgery go easier and safer". He went on and on about how a liver too big gets in the way... just losing even a little will make the surgery safer... blah blah blah... I really thought he was just testing me to see if I could lose any weight at all.

so he wouldn't tell me how much he expected me to lose on this diet, because he didn't want me to stress out (Ha!) but later when I was alone with one of his assistants, I asked "can you tell me again how much I am supposed to lose on the pro-op diet, I can't remember?" and she cheerfully read my chart and said "fifteen pounds". I smiled and thanked her. In my head, I was like, "what??!!!!! impossible!!!!!! I can't!!!"

Then, on tv I saw a show about WLS and the doc was stressing how a fatty and enlarged liver was so bad for surgery and dangerous... and they showed livers during surgery of patients with "good, shrunk livers" and "bad, big livers". I was convinced and began a low-calorie/low-carb diet a week before my actual liquid diet and I lost a total of 20 # before my surgery!

Doc said I had an easy surgery and thanked me for the weight loss!!!!

so this post is already too long, but here I go again....

I felt great after losing just that 20 pounds! And it was such a great way to start of my new life. I also think it helped me emotionally for the surgery... I had already said good-bye to unhealthy food and binging on my own - not because my new Band made me.

I forgot to address this part...

I did lose the weight, so I can't say for sure; however, I think that he would have because he didn't want me to know how much and get stressed.

I remember reading others' posts about this and recall that some lost 8 pounds, some lost 12 pounds...

My doc requires it for a BMI of 40 or more. I was 41 and the office staff told me to skip it, so I gladly did.

If you are a higher BMI person you really should do it. It does make surgery easier.

I am still a month off from being banded and I've been put on a High Protein, no fat/sugar diet. I've been on it for about 3 weeks and am starting to stuggle with it but I'm slowly losing. I will have a liquid diet 2 weeks prior to surgery.

I will be banded in 10 days, and have been on a very high protein/extremely low sugar/fat/carbs diet. My skin looks amazing. I have never had skin like this before. So clear, soft and smooth! What a difference a diet makes. I will be on liquids only for 48 hours prior to surgery and for 2 weeks post-op.

Good Luck!!!

My doctor requires a 2 wk liquid diet post-op :speechles Frankly, I do not look forward to doing it. I know I can, I did it before years ago (many many years ago) But I still am dreading it! My husband has volunteered to do it with me as he as about 30 lbs to lose (poor little thing) I don't think he has a clue as to what he is getting himself into! But I do think it's nice that he's willing to go the extra mile with me! :)

You are lucky, two weeks is nothing. I had to do two weeks of Clear Liquids, two weeks of full liquids, two weeks of soft foods, and then gradually reintroduce solids. :)

Blaaaaaaaaaagh! :speechles I am lucky! How did it go for you?

It was HORRIBLE until I finally figured out the trick. Cut out ALL sugar and keep carbs exceedingly low. Then you don't get the blood sugar spikes that make you want to eat your frig and everything in it. After you go to foods that are more satisfying then you can put carbs back in there, but not sugar.

For other reasons I ended up being on clears for three weeks instead of two, so my liquid phase was a total of 5 weeks. It isn't as hard as you might think if you cut out sugar and carbs.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
