Failing at the preop diet

Recommended Posts

My surgery is on Thursday and I am terrified that my liver won't be shrunk enough for the surgery. No judging please, I tried to stick to grilled chicken and eggs but I haven't had as many Protein Shakes as I should have. Plus I've had whataburger like 3 times. Anyway, I'm just being honest. Has anyone sucked at the preop diet but still had a successful surgery? I still Clear Liquids only on the 26th and I'm going to try and get as much Protein in as I can before then.

I'm sure there are those that have but there are also individuals who didn't lose enough and woke up with an incomplete surgery.

The preoperative diet is as much about getting control of your eating habits as it is shrinking the liver.

Your surgery is on THURSDAY !!!!!

The pre-op diet is for your safety during surgery.

I'd be less worried about seeking validation than I would be with having a safe surgery.

I would contact your surgeon asap and be honest with them. Perhaps there is a more restrictive liquid only diet that you could follow up until then.

I sure as hell wouldn't want to go into surgery, only to wake up in recovery and find that that your procedure wasn't done.

It's much better to delay and be safe than to proceed if you know you clearly aren't ready.

Only you and your surgeon can make these determinations.

Not executing the liver shrink can be a problem for you come surgery time.

I have to be honest (not judging here), I wanted this surgery so badly that I followed my pre op diet to a t. I was on a liquid only, no food for 10 days.

I think it would have been harder to execute if I had been allowed a chicken breast or salad like some.

I Sam with Dub on this, I would call your surgeons office and let them know you had a stumble, they might suggest liquids only in an attempt to lose a few more pounds by Thursday's date.

This liquid diet is both for your benefit and your surgeons. There have been several posters who made it to surgery day, they began the procedure only to be closed back up and told until they lost more weight their surgery could not be performed. I also read about 1 who ended up with an open bypass because the shrink did not happen as it should have.

Don't mess around with this, you really want to be safe here.

Djmohr is telling you the truth. Plain and simple, the pre op diet is designed for liver shrinkage to allow your surgeon to access the area where he needs to work internally. The surgeon will be able to tell how compliant you have been with your pre op diet by the appearance of your liver.

The pre op diet is also an opportunity for you to revise your relationship with food. The surgery will not fix your belief system about eating.

I believe it would be better to let your medical team know what has happened, and follow their instructions.

Best wishes for a successful weight loss journey to better health!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
