Old New guy pre op

Recommended Posts

62 years old, suffering from what my GI Dr called "The largest bleeding ulcer he had ever seen" This was caused by a VBS procedure in 1984 where the band has eroded into my stomach Nothing stays down, 20 minutes after drinking Water up she comes

GI doc send me to Shands and Bariatric surgeon concurs Rouen Y is best way to do repair I really hadn't thought about the weight loss surgery, just wanted stomach repaired but this was best option

anyway, current questions: suggestions for things to put down my throat when 2 week pre surgery liquid diet begins (Other than Protein shake) Best blender to buy, one that will chop up the 19 pills I take daily for other issues, one that will cycle food from top of blender down to blades and one that has various size containers would be useful

I'm sure many questions to follow

Thanks

Tom

Depending on your budget, you can't go wrong with a blendtec or vitamix blender. I have a blendtec and it excels at making smoothies, purees and powers through ice.

Most of time time the first two weeks following bypass is:

Week 1 - Clear liquids only SF Jello, broth, Water, crystal lite, watered down apple juice, SF Popsicles

Week 2 - full liquids and clear liquids- same as above plus creamed Soups, yogurt, Protein shakes (no more watered down Apple juice)

Week 3 - the will move you to puréed if all goes well.

You should ask your surgeon for his/her food plan because they all seem to differ but they should give you some idea of exactly what to eat when.

In terms of meds, you should try to get yourself the liquid versions for the first 3 months or chewable if you can. Otherwise you will be crushing anything that is bigger around than a pencil eraser. This improves over time but those first 3 months it is pretty swollen in there.

I don't use a blender because I buy Premier Protein ready made shakes instead of all the powders. When I had the puréed stage I used either my food processor or I had a nutrition bullet. I have since given that nutri bullet away.

The best of luck to you! I hope all goes well.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
